I think it's society & maybe she should start paying too. I have been with my boyfriend for 5+. He makes $70,000+ a year ( alot more than me) but I still pay for some of our dates. I offer to pay as i don't believe this is fair either. I think those that expect it are looking for a free meal.
Has to do with cultures and norms. even in olden days (christians etc) would sell their daughters off via marriage. same concept takes place here where you are buying your fiance but it's just been glorified and modernized to reflect today's standards is all.
Did ya know familia (root word of family) means slave?

With society changing so fast the male is no longer expected to pay for a date if the female asks him out. The origins of the male paying for dates comes from the fact that females were not allowed to make money or hold property in so many societies. Even here in the US women were looked down on for working right up to the 1950's. So, if a female has no income how could she afford to pay for a date?
Edit PS Hey Freddy F that was some term paper there. If I go back to college, how much do you charge for writing papers?

Tipically, over time men have been the breadwinners, as in the past it was more common for the man to go out, make the money, and the lady to be the stay at home mum.
I think that as time has gone on society has accepted that being a gentlemen requires certain duties, and one of them is buying the lady dinner.
I have to say, if i like a girl, i LOVE doing anything with her, and buying dinner is more of a thrill, than a burden.

Why are men only attracted to pretty women? Why do we have to get our hair straightened/curly go tanning, wear makeup?
It's the way of the world. We watch what we eat to attract a mate. Buy pretty clothes, try and stay young - becuase men are visual.
Women like stability and security - so we put on make-up, you pay for dates.

My boyfriend pays for quite a bit when we go out, but many times its him making the plans and picking where we go.
However, he eats a ton at my place, I pay for all the groceries and do all the cooking which I dont mind doing. I'd say in alot of ways its 50/50.

Because that's what has been passed down from the gentleman's generation like out grandpas! Just like opening doors for women, its the polite thing of a man to do that is if he is traditional. I dated a non traditional man whom expected me to pay for everything it felt so weird i gave him the money ahead of time, its different if you go dutch pay half and half, now my finance pays even if i try, its a the gesture of making me feel like a lady, letting that women know that you are going to take care of them. Even though you really take care of each-other.

They aren't, but lots of guys assume they're supposed to, in order to impress the girl if they want it to end with them getting laid. Basically, it will depend upon the attitude of the girl and how self-assured you are and whether or not you can control the spending and sharing. I pay for some, my date pays for some; if not, she'd better be coughing up her fair share of something!!!

i guess girls expect it cause they can go out with anyone, so if they choose you, you should be the one paying to keep them with you.
over time everything should be split up. people should understand the financial part of dating and that it is not right for the guy to always pay. if the girl always makes the guy pay, i would assume that the relationship is not that strong...

Men don't always pay. Just most do. Ususally they offer. But me, I don't think that a man should have to pay for a women unless, like you said, he asks her on the date. I rarely even let a guy pay for me. I argue with him for at least 20min before I finaly agree to it. I usually pay for myself. I don't see why men have to pay either. I guess most girls are just to spoiled.
