I'm talking about carols like these:

Away in a manger
God rest ye merry gentlemen
Hark the Herald angels sing
O little town of Bethlehem
O come all ye faithful
Silent Night
The First Noel
We three Kings of Orient Are

I'm genuinely interested in the points of views of Atheists, having once been one myself. Many thanks to all who contributed their views.

Let me clarify that I am not saying it is hypocritical. I am asking you all if YOU think it is hypocritical.

being an Atheistic audiophile, I find that it doesn't take religion to appreciate the beauty of religious music, even if you don't agree with the message

Quite honestly,I sometimes hum or sing them myself. Why is this hypocritical?I don't believe in god=I can't sing Christmas carols?..And you say it's YOU guys that get persecuted?

Well, can I sing "ghost riders in the sky"if I don't believe in either ghosts or flying horses? My,this s such a tolerant Christian society I'm envisioning here

You guys get "atheist"mixed up with "Dracula"Holy water doesn't burn me,I can look at a cross, even hold one,I can sing Christmas carols,I've read the bible.Atheists are just people who don't believe in god.Sometimes a song just gets stuck in your head and it won't go away. You,and everyone here,KNOWS what I'm talking about there

of course it's not hypocritical. by singing Christmas Carols we are remembering the birth of Jesus. I am from India. you know we hav mainly Hindus, Muslims and Christians (Catholic and Orthodox). We all will attend the carols as if we are one and same and sing for these carols (religious and others as well) in the houses of non christians also.

I don't think its hypocritical. They are just songs after all and part of the traditional English Christmas. Carols always remind me of my childhood and bring back happy memories of when Christmas seemed more real.

I am an atheist, and I pretty much try not to sing any overly religious songs at christmas time. I mean, Jingle Bells is one thing, but since I dont believe in any god, singing about their glories and all that makes me look kinda wierd. However, i do sing Silent Night, because it has become more of a christmas song than a christmas RELIGIOUS song. But i probably wont sing any others unless I have to, like in school or something

Song, music and poetry are art forms. I can enjoy the art form and the beauty of the music without believing in the content of the christmas carol just the same as I can with any song I hear or sing.

Nope. I love Christmans carols, Christmas movies, Christmas trees, and so forth.

I even like a good Chrismas mass now and then.

Atheist children don't need to be shielded from the fact they live in a Christian world.

No, it's not hypocritical because we know it's all fiction. Don't you sing silly songs about characters that don't exist? It's just like singing about Mary having a little lamb, or being Up on the Housetop with Old Saint Nick. It's seasonal festivity, nothing more.

We sing Warren Zevon songs at Christmas.
Lawyer, guns and money.
Mr. Bad Example

Very uplifting.

My 4 year old is currently in love with Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer, and likes Werewolves of London.

I sing along to Ramble On by Led Zepplin, but am not planning to leave my family........And don't believe that Golum and the evil orcs walked away with Robert Plants mystical girlfriend.

I just happen to like the songs. Christmas Carols fall into the same category as wizard rock.

to me, a christmas carol is no different than any other ballad, song or fable. it's just a story.

as far as hypocrisy goes, is there anything more hypocritical than religion? i doubt it very much.

something good happens, it was god, something bad, it was the devil, or better still, ah, that's free will. where's free will when a woman wants the right to choose an abortion?

funny how this god character is so weak, that 'he' needs a bunch of unhinged nut jobs to do 'his' dirty work for him.
