How mean is this? I finish tomorrow for Christmas (I'm a temp secretary), and since I started here, I've had no desk and have had to 'desk share' when someone isn't in the office for the day. I have to keep swapping all over the place. The desk I'm at now, the person's coming back to it later today, so I have no desk for an hour. My boss says, "Well, as you've an hour before you go home, you can help me stuff letters into envelopes". How mean is that? You'd think she'd let me go home, as I've no desk and near to Xmas.

I've had some real scrooges in the past and they always complained about employee morale and productivity. They werent smart enough to realize that they were the problem. I moved on and used them as examples of what I would never do as a boss. Have a good holiday and leave a little lump of coal on the desk of the meanie boss.

I think my staff would agree I'm quite a nice boss, I've bought them all gifts out of my own money, given them an early finish tomorrow despite the fact that they've already been given extra days free so that they don't have to come in between Christmas and New Year ( I will be covering the department from home and am happy to do so so that they can have a decent break). They've also been given a lunch, a party and a cash bonus by the company and yet some of them are still moaning because they have to come in tomorrow at all even though they will also be getting gifts from the MD. What is wrong with you people?? You are paid to work, you are not doing anyone a favour by turning up yet you are so ungrateful to have a decent job in a clean, warm environment that many people can only dream about. Grow up and stop being so damned greedy.

My dear girl. You have just completed lesson #1 about Temporary Help. Why do you think you have not had a desk? Because you're temporary. Yes, you are the official "Go Fer". You know. Go for this, go for that. Temporary helpers are just that "temporary" and are lower than the trash can next to the chair they are sitting in. I've been there. I remember having one boss who like you on my last day had me straightening out the break room because there were no more "useful things to be done". She said "before you go, straighten out the lunch area so our regular people don't have yada yada yada". Hey, I got paid the hourly wage up to the minute I left. So suck it in, do your "temp" best job you can and make sure you get full wages for your work. If you want a desk. Go find a PERMANENT job. Been there. Done that. Good luck and just remember this: at least you have a job. There are many who don't and would take your "temp" job any day.

Personally, I think that you're just being way too "picky" on this one. After all--it's only ONE HOUR! You've gone this long without a desk, and you're finished up with this assignment anyway, so what difference does it make?? Use it to "chit-Chat" with your boss while the both of you are doing this. You just may find out that she really isn't all that mean, but rather--she is under a lot of pressure from HER boss.

Atleast you have a job and you are making money for christmas presents. I wouldn't complain about that. Doesn't sound to hard, and christmas isn't until next week. So chill for now and stuff envelopes, you are getting paid. She would be a mean boss if she didn't pay you. And by the way, you are a temp, bottom of the totum pole!! Welcome to a thing called life! Jessica S. the 15 year old is an idiot! She isn't old enough to get a job and she is answering this question?! HAR HAR HAR!!

Do you deserve it? I mean...even though you're a temp...have you ever taken the initiative to work an extra hour? Or even an extra 15 minutes? Welcome to the working world. Your boss is a business person and trust me business people give NOTHING for free...not even time off.
Have you tried to develop a working relationship with your boss and displayed respect? Have you given her a Christmas/Holiday card or maybe picked up donuts or timbits for the entire office before? Kill with kindness...you'll get so much further in life. Be thankful you have a job. So many people are out of work. Good Luck!

I think you should be glad to have a job. There are a lot of people who would gladly desk share and actually WORK if they could only have a reliable paycheck.
Shame on you for being so self-centered.

Your boss should definitely let you go home early..... PERMANENTLY.... as in, You're Fired, don't come back.... lazy little b*tch
What is it with people, they get hired to do a job, then b*tch and complain because they are actually expected to do the job they're being paid for... and then b*tch and complain that they're not being paid enough for the job they're NOT doing. I mean seriously.... you're a temp SECRETARY.... stuffing envelopes is CERTAINLY within the realm of the job description of a secretary.... Its not like she asked you to clean toilets or something..... geez!

The real question is do you want a job and a pay check or do you want to go home. If you did not want to work that hour you should have said so and went home.
No the boss was not mean, it's a business decision, nothing more nothing less
