we make stuff. i'm in a group that makes scarves and hats for local homeless shelters and my step-daughter decided she wanted to give to a local battered womens shelter too. so she learned how to crochet and made a little blanket for a baby there. got to give it to her and everything. it was precious, she kissed the baby on the head and i gave the mother 10 dollars (its all I had). lead by example. i hope my four month old takes after her ten year old half sister.

My family and I go to church on a regular basis. We picked an "angel" off of the "angel tree" and bought presents for them. Then we put together a box for "Operation Christmas Child" which involves putting a shoe box full of small things to be sent to a child anywhere in the world. For the Christmas Eve service, my kids usually perform We Three Kings. We read A Christmas Carol every year after the service and on Christmas Day, we serve breakfast to the people at the homeless shelter, usually bringing gifts from the church with us. We do lots during this time of year, and I don't even have to force my kids to do so (like some parent's would have too)

We do all kinds of things that remind them that this holiday is about more than just getting presents.

We work together to *give* presents to people we love & people who help us during the year (schoolteacher, bus driver, mail carrier, etc)

We give the kids $1 for each person who lives in our house, then go to the Dollar store one day for a fun shopping trip where they buy a present for their sisters, brother, mom & dad. Then, have fun secretly wrapping them up & putting them under the tree.

We go to scout outings to sing carols at nursing homes & decorate the community tree.

We visit the Zoo & go to other community holiday events.

We listen to their sister sing in the high school choir.

We donate a gift to the 'giving tree' at church.

And, we look forward to the party at their Aunt's house each Christmas Eve, where they'll have fun with their cousins & family.

Giving is a year-long practice, not just during the holidays for our family. We donate to various organizations throughout the year, including our church and make sure our children see this being done. We also remind them constantly about how blessed they are to have a family like ours and we don't focus on the material things in our lives.

I took my children shopping and they selected a modestly priced toy to donate. Then we went to the "angel tree" and selected an anonymous child's list and fulfilled their wish to the best of our ability.

We also baked cookies to take to our friends and relatives. That was a lot of fun and the kids were proud of their accomplishments. Some of our friends took their kids caroling (better in a big group).

The kids also made ornaments for the tree. We went to Christmas Eve services at church, too, and then got together with family on Christmas day and took a lot of pictures.

Fun, and special memories.

I had my son go through his toy box and pick out some toys for 'toys or tots'.

although, I dont know how much that has helped. he still keeps talking about the presents.

I agree with some of the other posters. I have my son do something like toys for tots or something so that he learns about sharing.
