I know that it is a very sad situation that you are in and my heart goes out to you but my advice will give you no comfort. I have been in you situation not once but twice. Over the last year and a half I have had to put down both of my beloved friends due to the severe arthritis and the pain that comes with it. We tried the pain killers and the steroids but in the end putting them down was the most humane thing we could do. You need to examine the quality of life your rottie has and not the quantity.

I don't want to be the one that tells you that it is time, I'm sure you already know that. But maybe it is time to see your vet and see what the growling is all about. My guess is that the growling is from pain, and if that's true, then maybe you should think more about your dog, who has given you 10 1/2 years than your own feelings. Believe me, I understand, I just had to put my canine buddy down after 8 1/2 years due to mouth cancer, and it does hurt, but would you make your grandmother suffer if you could help it?

First off, a proper diagnosis. The vet needs to x-ray his hips. Hip dysplasia is painful. If he has progressed to the point of difficulty getting up or down, sitting oddly, etc, he's in pain. Of course, it could also be arthritis. You need to get a diagnosis first. You can manage both with a proper grain free diet (not the horse sh8t your vet pushes on you, either) and joint supplements, but if he's actually having trouble getting around you may be looking at hip replacement surgery. If one hip needs surgery, the odds are very good that the other does too.

Sounds like she is painful. Is this a sudden change? Is she able to get up and walk around? If she is suddenly unable to stand, please see your vet immediately as this can be a sign of other problems that happen to old rottweilers (ruptured abdominal tumors). If not, talk with your vet about starting her on good arthritis medications (not asprin). 10 1/2 is old, but doesnt necessarily mean this is the end.

What does your vet say? You should really speak with him/her, to see if anything can be done for your dog . If not, if her quality of life is not going to improve, you should really do the right thing. I know it can be heartbreaking, but it is really more selfish to let her linger on in pain with no quality of life.
