I just saw this breathtaking answer to a question about children born into situations where they become victims of violence and abuse:

"Believe it or not, the soul chose his fate. He wanted to experience what it means to be really human. In this case he wanted to know what it felt like to be abused. I know it sounds crazy but thats what I believe"

This has got to be one of the most absurd things I have ever read (and that's saying something). What do you folks think?

I believe the parent chooses to abuse the child, but I do believe that before the soul enters the womb at three months that that soul has an idea of what it is going to have to face. Maybe it is to show those around the person what sort of person they are.
I do believe we do choose our own fates, yes. As for he wanted to know what it was like to be abused, I think the poor guy took too many hits to the head.
I wouldn't say its the most disturbing thing I've heard, my little white furry friend, but I do believe that he may need some sort of therapy, but maybe he's telling the truth.

I do believe that there are somethings in this universe that I believe that science has not yet proven, and I don't believe that the forms of science we practice will reveal some of this things.

Absurb, no, but strange, YES!

I would think that this person really has no idea of the turmoil that is caused by any childhood abuse, The devastating consequences for the rest of the person's life. I think that it's easy for this person to make stupid statements because they have never seen up close the results of abuse. It's really easy to talk about something that you know little about and are less likely to have to endure. I truly hope that the person does not have access to children he has a warped sense of what they want and need.

I think that's insane, this sounds like it's coming from a person trying to justify abusing children. As for the whole recycled soul thing, if it understood the concept of pain was like then why would it choose to have so heavily involved it's new life?

I actually believed this at one time in my 'New Age' phase... it was a way of trying to feel some sense of harmony and goodness in all things.

Now don't think so anymore (and I'd never say anyone 'deserved' to be tortured and murdered, for pete's sake, what's fair about that if you're starting a new life?). Now I think actions like that are purely evil on the part of the evildoer, end of story.

Heck, by that logic, we should even try to stop them, right? THAT sure doesn't make any sense.

Absolutely nuts. Someone hasn't thought this through, obviously.
Apparently, they believe that at some point before birth, the individual soul has the conscious ability to make a choice, then choose their parent, even wanting to be abused.
I'm trying to narrow down in my mind which religious persuasion this person took their beliefs from.

Very absurd indeed. SOmeone is playing with the funny looking mushrooms again, eh! I cannot fathom how anyone, anyone in this world would chose to suffer, escpecially children. I mean, It really goes against my understanding of life in general.

If thats truly what is believed by the person, then i suggest they be secretive about their beliefs, lest they get beaten up by someone.

I did actually hear about this before though, i personally don't think anyone in the world (or beyond) wants to suffer.

I don't know who said that but it sounds ignorant. What about the person doing the abusing? Aren't they responsible for what they do? How can a person being oppressed choose anything?

Yeah, it does sound crazy, because it IS crazy. The soul doesn't exist, and neither does free will, so it would be impossible for anyone to choose what kind of experiences they will have in their lifetime. Not to mention that you only live once.

I agree.

This is one of the major problems I have with reincarnation and karma and stuff. Once a person told me -- totally seriously -- that everybody who was tortured and killed in any of the holocausts that pepper our history, all deserved it for bad things they had done in "previous lifetimes."

:o

It is absurd and extremely disrespectful to human suffering. It explains it away with a quaint fairy tale, then we don't have to work for justice and healing, because ... well.... we all "chose our fate." Complete and total baloney.
