If anyone EVER touched my kids they better hope they can run cos the only thing they would hit again is the bottom of the lake with a brick round there neck !!

I was smacked by my parents and don't think anything of it, sometimes children need a shock to make them listen so worse doesn't happen (eg playing in the road)
but only my parents ever smacked me, I don't think another person would be within rights to smack a child. Teachers should let parents know if there's a problem.

The thing is, some children have bad parents who'll be more likely to side with their naughty child than the teacher or who won't discipline the child in which case the teacher has a real problem. An out of control child.
I worked in a school with completely out of control children and they ruined lessons for the rest of the class, nobody learnt anything. For those children the threat of a cane as in the past might have kept them silent whereas now they know nothing is going to happen. I don't know what the answer is as I wouldn't want teachers hitting my children but then I would make sure my children behaved.

Absolutely not!!!! It is the parents decision on how they discipline their children. If a child is misbehaving at school it is up to the teacher to communicate to the parent of any behavior problems. A teacher should never hit or smack a child. I'm sure it is difficult to be a teacher and deal with so many children with so many different personalities but if they can't have the patience not to hit a child they should not be there.

No I don't think it is OK at all. In the "old days" when I was a kid they did use a strap on the palm of your hand though and even though it sounds really awful to do that the kids usually thought twice about misbehaving for fear of getting the strap. In todays school system they are simply suspended so it is almost a reward for the child since they probably would rather be home.

My secondary school still had the cane when I went there.

I was there for five years, and in all that time, it was used twice. But it sure made people think about abusing the teachers, either verbally or physically. You just didn't. Nobody did - because they knew that cane was there. Now it isn't, and the teachers live in fear of what the kids might (and do) do to them physically, but aren't allowed to lay a finger on them without it being called abuse.

Believe me, if my child behaved badly enough at school that a teacher would even consider corporal punishment, it wouldn't matter whether the teacher was allowed to or not...because I'd do it myself.

If a kid was good then they wouldn't need a smack. I think it should be allowed in some circumstances such as if the kid swore at a teacher or got into a fight, or was caught stealing, then they should bring back something like the cane. Maybe we wouldn't have so many kids that are out of control and people may get a decent chance at life if bad kids were punished for their evil ways.

I disagree totally! I do believe there should be punishment for a child if he/she misbehaves. But corporal punishment should be left to the decision of the parents. I believe that NO ONE EXCEPT THE PARENTS HAVE THAT RIGHT! If a teacher smacked my Daughter...well let's just say it wouldn't be pretty.

I dont believe any teacher should be allowed to smack children. although teachers are in loco parentis many parents do not believe in hitting their children and young children are too sensitive and vulnerable to be hit by comparative strangers.
I do sometimes think there is a case for corporal punishment on wayward teenagers in extreme cases by the headmaster/mistress (caning on the hand - never the buttocks) but as this is disallowed in British schools the horrors will just have to carrying on with continuing deteriorating behaviour until they kill someone and can be inprisoned.

If a teacher ever touched my child I would hunt them down! No, seriously, I would be mad and I would take that teacher to court. If it were the law that they could do it where I lived, I would just move. A sub-teacher hit my sister when she was in like 5th grade and my stepdad took that teacher to court. He didn't get money or anything, obviously, but that teacher was removed from the district and couldn't come within so many feet of my sister or any of her friends. It probably ruined his career, I can only hope.

A teacher is not even allowed to put their hands on a child...period. Unless the child has an IEP that calls for physical restraint, a teacher can be sued. Also, the restraint is done in a bear hug manner, never rough or harmful. It is only done when the teacher feels that the child might hurt themself or someone else. (safe school laws)
I would truly hurt someone if they smacked my child!
