when i bought my budgie they said she was 5-6weeks old. She had no tail and couldn't fly at all. That would make her about 4months old and for the last month she has been very bitey, especially in the cage. When i got her she loved a head scratch and would snuggle under the collar. now she will hop up on a finger but not stay long - but only outside the cage - inside she bites so hard she draws blood and actively chases my hand. Any ideas?

Is your budgie's flight feathers cut?

Heres how to cut the flight feathers. If you are too scared I can cut them if you live near me in Exeter UK for £2

It will not hurt them

I have a budgie who has a attitude when hes in a cage with his mate, I use a stick to get him out of the cage, then he's friendly and sweet.
His flight feathers were cut because someone wanted him so I sort of trained him to stay on my finger and to step up but they never turned up to take him.

So try the stick to get your budgie out of the cage instead of using your hand when she does step up take her out of the cage on the stick then give a treat to say well done.
If she is naughty when she is out of the cage put her back and shut the cage door and ignore her. Then try again 10 mins later. If she's naughty again then put her back for longer and so-on.....

I give mine treats such as:
Salad Cress - Peas - Apple - Celery - Courgette - Sweetcorn - Watercress - Boiled Rice (white or brown) - Parsley Sprig - Grapes - Cucumber - Dandelion Leaves - Broccoli - Broad Beans - Carrot - Finger of bread soaked in water (white or brown) - Mashed Boiled Egg (shell also) - Tomatoes - Lettuce - Cooked Pasta - Radishes (leaves also) - Crackers - Crisps- Chips - Potoatoes

Hi Some One

Birds need a lot of attention, and handling.
As birds grow older they also will reach sexual maturity and will develop the natural instinct to procreate.
If your baby budgy was hand fed,it would be easier for you to keep it tame, providing you would train it DAILY.
Most of us do not have the time nor the patience to handle a bird on a daily basis, and that's when they resent the interference of humans.
You say that inside it's cage ,it bites so hard that it draws blood.Sure that is his cage and that is his territory. On the outside he does not feel the protection of the wire bars, and he will jump to your finger.
Two things I will recomend:
First- if you want to hand tame this bird, you will have to clip it's wings,so he will not be able to fly away. Then open its cage and allow him to perch outside the cage, that's when you aproach him to try to get him on your finger. At this time try to talk to him, with asweet voice, and let him understand that you like his company. This must be done daily, and at the same time.Give him a treat to make him stay on your finger,
longer and longer until he fells confident on your hand.
Second- get him or her a mate and breed them.Whem they have babies, you can pull one of the babies at about seven days of age and hand feed until maturity. You will be rewarded with a very sweet and sociable baby that will be a lot easier to handle ,providing you will do it DAILY !

Best wishes to you .Regards

you do have to humanize them. its like any animal. you have to hand do alot to them and let them be with you alot that is what it does makes them tame. if its in the cage all the time they won't get tame and bite hard. sometimes its funny but you can find some that are nataurally really friendly to begin with and that is what i generally buy. they are nice to have I lost one at 11 years old and that is all for me i sure miss him but you have to move on
