I think that would depend on more than one factor. In the modeling world, I think a size ten is "plus size". Once, out of boredom, I watched a few minutes of "America's Next Top Model." (My 22-y-o SIL likes that show. I don't see what the fascination is of watching skinny girls reinforce the theory that tall and skinny equals pretty. As well as the stereotype of only being appreciated for one's looks.) The girls were talking and something was mentioned that a size eight is plus size and that there would never be a size eight model on the cover of "Vogue". I had seen more than enough and turned the channel.
For my sister-in-law who is 5'6" a size eight might be a good size for her. I think that is what my sister wears and they're about the same height. My sister is thin as she trains for, and runs marathons and eats well. My SIL has always been a bit bigger and while I'm taller by six inches, I've taken some of her cast off clothes, shirts and skirts. Also, my sister and I have also swapped some clothes as well, mostly shirts, like things that she's acquired and were too big or things of mine that I've either grown out of or shrank in the wash or I just didn't like anymore but thought my sister would like. (We do this with our mother too.)
However, I'm six feet tall. If I were a size eight, I would be very thin and underweight and unhealthy. It might be plus size in the modeling world, but in the real world, nope. Even when I was a size ten for most of 2006 I was underweight and skinny.
For my sister and sister-in-law, my current size of 14 would be a "big size". However, for me, it's not too bad, especially since I just had a baby three months ago and I still have some baby weight. Once I get back down to my size 12, I'll be fine.
For my mother, who is about 5'8", a 12 might also be a higher size than what she should wear.
I've read that the average woman is a size 12. Yet, that still doesn't consider things like height. To me, it's just not black and white.
