Asslamliakum
Islam, which means “peace” and “surrender,”
or more fully “the peace which comes when one’s life is surrendered to God.”
And this religion is designed for all humanity;
Islam is specifically designed not to be an ethnic religion
even though it arose from the lands of Arab peoples.
This characteristic it shares with Christianity,
and, in general, Islam’s basic theology
is virtually identical to Judaism and Christianity in it broad outlines
What is Islam? Who are the Muslims? What is going on in the world today? Why is there constant conflict in the Middle East? There are so many questions and concerns that people have today. To many people Islam seems to be something foreign. But Islam should not be something dark and obscure; it is something beautiful, clear and simple.
Like Christianity and Judaism, it is a monotheistic religion that says Believe in one God and holds many similarities. It is an extension of Judaism and Christianity, and Muslims, Christians, and Jews are all considered spiritual sons and daughters of Prophet Abraham.
So why do some people associate Islam with terrorism, when in Arabic the word Islam itself simply means submission, obedience, surrender, purity, and peace? And why do some people think that this is a religion of hate, when the basis of Islam is love; Love Allah (the one God), and love the prophet Muhammad (Pbuh)?
In addition, one of the most important aspects of Islam is for a Muslim to love his/her neighbor as oneself. In our religion we should not go to bed at night with a full stomach, if we know that our neighbor is going to bed with his an empty.
There is no doubt about it that Islam is all about peace. In Islam killing one innocent soul is like destroying humanity, and saving one soul is like saving all of humanity. Muslims consider Jews and Christians as the people of the book, that is, Muslims believe Jews and Christians were also given the word of God in their holy books.
Looking into history, we will see that for many centuries Christians and Jews lived peacefully under the Muslims' rule with their full rights respected and well treated. There are many similarities within the three religions that many people do no know about. For example, many Christians don't know that Muslims believe in the miracle birth of Jesus as well, and recognize that he is the messiah, and also believe that he is going to come back.
These facts are all mentioned in the holy Koran. But Muslims do not believe that Jesus is God nor Son of God, but believe that he is a prophet, and that the one, unique God has no partners, and no sons.
The Koran says that the differences between people should be a reason for them to seek to know one another better, but not to kill each other. It is a shame that today Islam is seen as a religion of hate, and violence, and that it was spread by the sword. Prejudices and misunderstandings about Muslims and Islam are persistent problems.
We cannot hold a whole religion responsible for the actions of a few. Islam is the second largest religion in the World after Christianity. More than seven million Muslims live in the United States. So, we cannot say that all Muslims are terrorists, just like we cannot say that all priests are child molester. We should stop making those generalizations.
Muslims all over the world condemn the acts of those few radicals that kill innocent people. This is not what the great religion of Islam teaches. A few radicals hijacked the microphone of the media, and told the rest of the world to go away, whereas the rest of the Muslims want to take the microphone back, and tell people about the peaceful nature of their religion, and open their doors to the world. So, it is everyone's duty to listen to those millions of peaceful Muslims and to understand the nature of Islam.
The literal meaning of Islam is peace; surrender of one’s will i.e. losing oneself for the sake of God and surrendering one’s own pleasure for the pleasure of God. The message of Islam was revealed to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings on him) 1, 400 years ago. It was revealed through angel Gabriel (on whom be peace) and was thus preserved in the Holy Quran. The Holy Quran carries a Divine guarantee of safeguard from interpolation and it claims that it combines the best features of the earlier scriptures.
The prime message of Islam is the Unity of God, that the Creator of the world is One and He alone is worthy of worship and that Muhammad (peace and blessings on him) is His Messenger and Servant. The follower of this belief is thus a Muslim - a Muslim’s other beliefs are: God’s angels, previously revealed Books of God, all the prophets, from Adam to Jesus (peace be on them both), the Day of Judgement and indeed the Decree of God. A Muslim has five main duties to perform, namely; bearing witness to the Unity of God and Muhammad (peace and blessings on him) as His Messenger, observing the prescribed prayer, payment of Zakat, keeping the fasts of Ramadhan and performing the pilgrimage to Mecca.
Islam believes that each person is born pure. The Holy Quran tells us that God has given human beings a choice between good and evil and to seek God’s pleasure through faith, prayer and charity. Islam believes that God created mankind in His image and by imbuing the attributes of God on a human level mankind can attain His nearness. Islam’s main message is to worship God and to treat all God’s creation with kindness and compassion. Rights of parents in old age, orphans and the needy are clearly stated. Women’s rights were safeguarded 1,400 years ago when the rest of the world was in total darkness about emancipation. Islamic teachings encompass every imaginable situation and its rules and principles are truly universal and have stood the test of time.
In Islam virtue does not connote forsaking the bounties of nature that are lawful. On the contrary one is encouraged to lead a healthy, active life with the qualities of kindness, chastity, honesty, mercy, courage patience and politeness. In short, Islam has a perfect and complete code for the guidance of individuals and communities alike. As the entire message of Islam is derived from the Holy Quran and indeed the Sunnah and Hadith (the traditions and practices of the Holy Prophet, peace and blessings on him) it is immutable in the face of change in time and place. It may appear rigid to the casual eye, in actual fact it is most certainly an adaptable way of life regardless of human changes.
Islam teaches that the path to spiritual development is open to all. Any individual who searches the One Creator can seek nearness to God through sincere and earnest worship; it is central to establishing a relationship with the Almighty. This message for humanity fills hearts with hope and courage.
The Qur'an has normally used the word "Muslim" in its literal sense. Literally, it means exactly what you have stated. It is also clear from the Qur'an that this word was used by the followers of all the true prophets (pbut) of Allah. In this way, the Qur'an has actually made the point that the only way to success is "Submission to the commandments of Allah" or in other words, "Submission to the truth".
But, on the other hand, the Qur'an has also used the word in the same meaning as we normally do (for example see Al-Hujraat 49: 14), i.e. referring to people who accepted Tawheed (belief in one God), Risalat (belief in the prophethood of Mohammad) and aakhirat (belief in the Day of Judgment).
This variance in the meaning and implication of the word, in my opinion, implies the two different facets of the word. In reality, the word implies a person who submits to the truth, while from a legal perspective, that is for the worldly purpose of distinguishing between Muslims and non-Muslims, the word referes to an individual who holds a particular set of beliefs.
I hope this helps.

Asalamo Aleikom. First of all, i think that you need to change the manner on how you want to know if Islam is a peaceful religion or not. Why? Your question is very subjective and the answers you will get are very questionable whether they come from a person whose for Islam or a person whose against Islam.
If you want to know that whole of Islam, you should not just tell people to cite some verses from the Qur'an. Citing, cutting and separating just a portion of a verse from a Qur'an from it's entire verse or chapter can distort its true meaning.
For example, John exlaims "You are not beautiful physically, however, your inner beauty is what matters to me". If another person would incorrectly cite only a portion and say that "John said that you are not beautiful"; then this person delivered a wrong idea because of just stating or cutting a portion of what was meant.
I hope you understand what i mean by this simple example. Islam preaches truth, justice and peace. Islam is not only a religion for it is a way of life that leads us to the One, All-Powerful and Merciful God/Allah(arabic name for God). It would be truly great if you would read the Holy Qur'an with an open heart. Soon, you'll realize that Islam is the truth despite of the many persecutions it faces today.
p.s.I hope that you will not judge Islam because of the ignorant accusations of many non-muslims including those who want to destroy the path to God. Also, it is not right to judge islam because of a minority of "so called Muslims" who do not live up to the values that Islam teaches. Just like other religions, there are good and bad christians, buddhists, muslims, jews, etc.

That depends on just _who_ is doing the interpreting. The same goes for Christianity.
In either case it is the extremists who drive the 'wrath of God'.
Like Christ, Muhammad told his followers to be at peace with their neighbors.
So, was Muhammad a prophet of God? IMO, yes he was a prophet but not the Christ.
Jesus is the Christ.

You could have done this yourself. But here's some of the verses of the Holy Qur'an about peace.
'AND DO NOT allow your oaths in the name of God to become an obstacle to virtue and God-consciousness and the promotion of peace between men: for God is all-hearing, all-knowing.'
'AND [know that] God invites [man] unto the abode of peace, and guides him that wills [to be guided] onto a straight way.'
'For, [true] servants of the Most Gracious are [only] they who walk gently on earth, and who, whenever the foolish address them, reply with [words of] peace;'
'All believers are but brethren. Hence, [whenÂever they are at odds,] make peace between your two brethren, and remain conscious of God, so that you might be graced with His mercy. '

So when the sacred months have passed away, then slay the idolaters wherever you find them, and take them captives and besiege them and lie in wait for them in every ambush, then if they repent and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, leave their way free to them; surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. (The Immunity 9.5)
And when you journey in the earth, there is no blame on you if you shorten the prayer, if you fear that those who disbelieve will cause you distress, surely the unbelievers are your open enemy. (The Women 4.101)
Believers, make war on the infidels who dwell around you. Deal firmly with them." (Surah 9:121-)
"If you do not fight, He will punish you sternly, and replace you by other men." (Surah 9:37-)
"Fighting is obligatory for you, much as you dislike it." (Surah 2:216)

Peace and Security (part 1 of 3): Peace with God
Description: How Islam creates a sense of peace with one’s creator and one’s self.
By Jamaal al-Din Zarabozo (© 2007 IslamReligion.com) -
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Relationship between Islam and “Peace” (Salaam)
Perhaps the best way to begin a discussion of the relationship between Islam and peace and security is to deal with a statement that is heard often these days: “Islam means peace.” If the one making this statement means that the actual meaning of the word “Islam” is “peace,” then this is definitely wrong. It is true that the word Islam and the Arabic word for peace (salaam) both come from the same root. This demonstrates that there is going to be a relationship between the two. It is vitally important to understand what that relationship is and how that relationship occurs.
The word “Islam” is the verbal noun of the verb aslama. This verb is defined as, “He resigned or submitted himself.” When used with respect to God, it means, “He became submissive to God.”[1] Thus, Islam is about an individual recognizing who his Lord is and recognizing that his attitude toward his Lord and Creator should be one of submission and worship.
This understanding of what the word Islam means is vital for understanding the relationship between Islam and peace. Islam, the submission to God, is what leads to true peace. True peace—both internally and externally—can only be the result of the correct implementation of Islam. Of course, what is meant here is not simply peace as in “an absence of a state of war.” Peace means much more than that. One can be free of war yet still suffer from anxiety or despair and lack peace. Here, it is referring to a complete sense of peace. Islam brings about a complete tranquility and peace of mind that is the result of realizing that one is believing and acting in accord with the guidance of one’s Creator. This internal peace can then spread to the family, the community, the society and the world as a whole.[2] It is a special form of tranquility that can only be produced by the proper belief in God. Hence, God says:
“Indeed, there has come to you from God a Light and a clear Book wherewith God guides all those who seek His Good Pleasure to ways of peace, and He brings them out of darkness by His Will unto light and guides them to a Straight Way” (Quran 5:15-16)
In fact, God is calling humans to the abode of eternal peace:
“God calls to the home of peace (Paradise) and guides whom He wills to a Straight Path” (Quran 10:25)
For those who follow this path, their ultimate reward will be the abode of peace:
“For them will be the home of peace (Paradise) with their Lord” (Quran 6:127)
In sum, it is not correct to say, “Islam means peace,” but certainly true peace comes only via Islam.
