Definitely sounds like ear mites. You will see lots of black crusty material in the ears. This is not uncommon for kittens and outdoor cats to have.
The Vet will swab the ears and check under the cope for ear mites. Even if he doesn't see mites, he may still treat for them.
He will then clean the ears (and possibly instruct you to do the same @ home)
The Vet I work for treats ear mites with Tresaderm ( a liquid medication that goes in the ears) twice a day for 2 weeks and Revolution (a topical flea, ear mite etc. medication) once a month for 3 months. Your Vet may have a different treatment regimen.
He may have you bring kitty back in a few months to re check the ears and make sure the mites are gone.
Good luck!

I think I know what the problem is. I own a holistic pet wellness center and treat an array of ailments so I should be of some help. I don't recommend any spot-on flea/tick/mite medicine from vets as they are known to cause damage to the central nervous system and even death.
If the dirt looks like coffee grounds then its ear mites. Don't be alarmed, they are easy to treat. And yes they can get them even if they are an indoor animal. All you need to do is take a clove of garlic, mash it, and put it in about a 1/2 cup of olive oil. Let that infuse overnight (or purchase premade garlic oil-with no other ingredients) Put 3 drops in each here and pinch the ear shut to massage oil into the canal. Keep in there for at least a minute. This will suffocate and kill all mites or bacteria/fungal infections. Garlic has many medicinal qualities. Then using a q-tip swab out all the black "dirt" you can see. Do not go any further into the ear canal as you can rupture the drum. The kitten will shake out the remaining oil then swab again. Repeat this daily until there is no more dirt. You may want to give kitty a bath as well. Incase there are any mites on her body that can travel back up. Hope that helps, let me know if you have any other questions.
Cheers,
Jessi

You should take him to a vet and have them check for ear mites. Having really dirty ears that young is often a good sign of them. -could've been picked up from anywhere, but the mother most likely had them if the kitten does.- Your vet will give you an inexpensive treatment that you apply directly to your kitten's ears.

Good job on making an appt. with your vet. When I got my kitten he had the dirtiest ears I had ever seen, and it turned out to be ear mites. Not only did he have them so severe that he had to be treated and kept overnight, but the vet thought he might be deaf in one ear due to busted ear drums. I have now had my kitty for 6 weeks (he is an indoor, only child) and I still have to administer ear drops to keep the infection caused by the mites, away.

He could have ear mites, or it could be flea dust. Just to be on the safe side take him to a vet to get him checked out. They will also be able to give him a health check and advise on suitable treatments and vaccinations.
It could be that he had the problem before you got him, as these things are usually picked up from other animals.

Your kitten has ear mites, listen to me, buy some Revolution for cats, they are drops that you put on the back of the neck, it will kill all fleas, ear mites, and worms as well as heartworms, there is nothing better on this planet for cats and I have tried it all! Buy it and keep it, put it on once per month and your cat will NEVER have a problem!

Could also be ear mites. See the vet. They have a medicine you can treat the ears with and they can tell you how to clean them. Not expensive but can be very harmful to your kitten if untreated.

It sounds like ear mites to me too. The vet should be able to give you drops for your kitten's ears, and after that you can clean them out.

This happened when we got our cat. He was real young, and my wife would clean his ears out, and next day they would be dirty.
The vet said possibly ear mites. You should be able to pick up ear drops at any pet store, but check with vet first.
