Women generally are curious about affection and care coming from men. It is in the nature of women, (which unfortunately does not exist in men according to psychologists) to possess the "sense of care" and becoming affectionate comes from their ability to bear children!
Therefore, women sometimes wonder why men become "intinctively" affectionate and loving if no firm relationship has been established yet. That's the reason they ask the question.
Don't worry in your case! It seems like you are a caring person after all. The question is not meant to doubt your intentions. It's better if you just answer her question truthfully by saying, "it's not the gift that is important, it's the giver!"
Happy holidays.

Grasshopper....
Men like ACTION. Fix that, repair this...hurry!
Women like to talk, share, be heard. They're not interested in results so much as the experience of sharing.
This is why men need to learn to just "be",and not remain so "switched-on" all the time. You'll get laid more if you study your quarry.
Women LIKE a man who can talk about babies, and cooking and this and that. Don't make all her interests foreign to yours. What do you know about make-up? Women's clothes? Read Cosmopolitan once in a while. Check out Lucky Magazine. Family Circle. Vogue.
Study the enemy's propaganda if you want to win this war.

PS Have some nice responses ready. Show your feelings. Don't avoid her questions - take them as an opportunity to get closer to her heart and mind. Just right there, next to her heart and mind, are her panties. Understand?
"Why did I buy this?"
"You are such a wonderful person, a truly lovely lady, and it makes me happy to recognize and reward that in you. Thanks for being my friend."

A woman's main goal in life is to get a commitment. They're hard wired for this. When they ask why you bought something they're hoping you tell you got because it reminds me of your eyes or just because I love you. They are not like men. Women are horribly insecure. They've been taught their whole life that they're "...sitting on a gold mine..." and they have to be sure that this is not the only reason you hang around.

maybe for the simple fact that when guys screw up they buy something to cover their dumb actions, other times its just simple modesty or curious about feelings.
