Yes, you just have to create an internal ps2 memory card, the option is under the game menu I think. Or you could by an adapter meaning you could plug in a physical ps2 memory card into the ps3 and save it on that.

Use the PS3 to PS3 transfer - it's what it's there for, and you can't transfer 'protected saves' (like FFXIII uses) any other way. All it's doing is transferring your files, which is the same as what you're trying to do the hard/long way You can't damage the blu-ray this way (i'd be fairly certain your originals problem was just a fault with the laser or something along those lines rather than anything you've done to it). Edit: if you try what the other chap suggested, the PS3 will try and format the hard drive.

Under Games you'll find a Virtual PS2 card. All of the data for PS2 games is there.

Yes. Your ps3 will create a "virtual" memory card to store all ps2 game data on.

They also have an adapter that so you can transfer your old ps2 memory card to your ps3
