My boyfriend woke me up in the middle of the night. He swore he was freezing cold. We took his temperature and it came to 100.3 degrees. He's been shivering (even lying next to me and under four blankets). He is also complaining of mild chest pain when he takes a deep breath. And he has a sore throat.
We don't have insurance and he's adment about not going in to the medical center. Do you think this is just a common flu? Or something more serious?

I'm going to try and convince him to go in.....he's worrying me.

Thanks.

Try giving him some aspirin or ibuprofen - the regular dose every four to six hours. This will help cut his fever and will make him feel better. Give him some warm liquids like chicken soup or tea and encourage him to stay in bed. If it's influenza he'll feel like hell for at least a week and if it's an infection he'll keep getting worse - especially the throat. I'd tell him that if he's not better or getting better on Sunday then he needs to go to the urgent care center in your area. If you do take him, be sure to explain that you have no insurance so they don't order expensive tests or prescribe super expensive pills.

In a tightly controlled setting, i.e. two sealed containers, the cold water would freeze first because it has less heat to lose. However, many real-life situations could cause the reverse to work. The two main ways I'm familiar with for steaming hot water to freeze faster than just warm water are: 1) the steaming hot water will lose some of its volume to evaporation, which means the remaining water will have to lose less heat to freeze, or 2) putting hot water into the freezer will usually cause the freezer to kick on. A running freezer will blow about the frigid air, causing things to freeze much faster than when it's simply sitting still. Hope this helps solve your mystery. :-)

Okay, I am not a doctor, but I do know a fever is symptom of an infection in the body. If it were me or my man, I would definitely get into an immediate care center. ER's cost a fortune and the wait is horrible. Immediate care centers are cheaper, and they usually have free samples of medicine and antibiotics for people who don't have insurance. I understand going is going to cost money, but fevers can do horrible things to your body such as brain damage, and that is just the beginning. I would definitely get him in somewhere, before it gets so bad he has to be admitted to the hospital- that IS costly!

He's got a fever and chills, and very probably bronchitis or another respiratory infection as the cause.

He'll feel better once he takes a fever-reducing medication (Tylenol, Motrin, or aspirin), but the underlying cause will still be there. He probably needs a ten-day course of antibiotics. You have time to check whether your community has a free or low-cost clinic, which should be perfectly adequate to treat what he's got.

I'm sorry to say but, Your boyfriend is not a Doctor is he? And if not. What in the heck is he doing diagnosing his medical condition!!!
As for the Blankets. I live in the cold country of Canada. It can go as low as -32 c. What I use is just two thin blankets but they are made of Arctic fleece. They have to be the warmest blankets I've ever Had, Very thin, Not bulky. But warm on the coldest nights. Arctic fleece by far. Bob.

Please take him to a good medical centre .Let them examine his chest, his throat ,blood and spittoon(if required).Don't go by self medication. From your description of symptoms, I am sure , it's not just ordinary cold and cough. It's harmful for you as well, if both of you are sleeping together .It's better you don't inhale and exhale in the same room. I am sure , doctor will ask you to sleep separately until he recovers fully.
