....can volunteer for national service, which is also called "civic service," and involves assisting staff at schools, hospitals and other institutions.

Yes its interesting how one said that after highschool there is nothing to do and hard to find a job so the benefits of volunteering help the future.

But I don't understand why the national service has said that there are no volunteer jobs available at the moment and arabs are not being accepted?

quote from article : "Shlomit Foundation, one of the prominent national service groups, has reported a significant increase in Arab volunteers. According to Shlomit figures, last year 140 Arabs volunteered through the association, while this year there were more than 220. Haya Shmuel, director general of Shlomit, says that another 180 young Arab men and women have registered with the association, but volunteer assignments have not yet been found for them, due to a lack of authorized positions. "

Cheers!

I think they should all join, and it will be to the benefit of both the Israeli Arabs themselves and Israel. For all their claims that it is the state that keeps them an underpriveleged minority, it is mostly through their own work that this is the case.
This program would open the doors of the society to them. To me it is the perfect compromise: serious army service is out of the question from both sides, but from a logical perspective national service shouldn't be. Besides for just doing good, it allows the Israeli Arabs to more fully integrate into Israeli society, something they've always claimed to want to do.
Personally, I think it would be much better if Israeli Arabs saw themselves as Israelis first and Arabs second. As Arabs are citizens of this country they should have the same duties placed on everyone else, including National Service. It is a chance to bridge the gaps and enjoy all the benefits they've complained about being excluded from . I hope they jump at the opportunity but so far things don't look promising.

They are comparable to the White Russians who fought with the German Army during World War II.

I think it should be made compulsary. They (Israeli Arabs) enjoy all the benifits of being sitizens without sharing the duties. If a person (doesn't matter Jewish arab or anyone else) doesn't want to serve in the armed forces then let him/her do alternative service. But it should be mandatory to do some kind of a service.

I think it's cool
THey're Israeli too
Why isolate them? Help them feel included in their state. It's a good idea.
Hope you found this helpful and respectful

As I understand it, the national service is beneficial, as it helps its participants find work and purchase a home once they complete the term...

Interesting article. Kind of disproves all that rubbish people speak about Israeli Arabs only ever being unhappy in Israel. If they are volunteering to defend Israel than they clearly like it there!
