It has been found that people that are in school and learning tend to be in REM sleep for longer periods then non-students. Although the main purpose of sleep is still not known, it is believed that sleep is involved with brain development and memory functions. Young children tend to spend most of their time sleeping. This is because they are at a point in their lives when their brains and bodies are growing rapidly. Also, by getting enough sleep people are usually more alert and therefore more able to learn. I hope this helps!
