Im a special needs monitor on a school bus and im having a veryyy hard time keeping a 6 year old awake on the bus.. The first of the year i read to her and all the other kids on the bus and that worked.. now they dont want me to read to them ( the boys ) and she wants to read herself so she reads her books and that makes her fall asleep even faster now.. I have talked with mom many times and she does send stuff for her to do the other day she sent a puzzle thing that seemed to work but yesterday she fell right asleep again. At the beginning of the school year she hit her head a few times but she was okay but if she hits it hard one day we have to pull the bus over call dispatch and they have to send a albluence and check her out that is board policy now so we really dont want that to happen...

Any sugestions on how to keep her awake??? I try to talk to her as much as possiable i ask her what she did in class to keep her awake but she just keeps shutting her eyes lol

i personally never saw the morning route on the bus cause i crashed out within minutes of getting on the bus.... every kid on my bus did it. some kids just really aren't morning people. when she falls asleep, lay her down. she won't fall that way. poor kid, morning is awful early.

Some kids just can't stay awake when in a vehicle, even if they have gotten plenty of sleep at home. My son (aged 6) nods off if we are in the car longer than 10 minutes. If she is falling asleep on the way TO school, then maybe you can start some lively songs on the bus, ones the kids can clap and sing to. From what you said, it sounds like the bulk of the problems are in the afternoon though. My thoughts are, she's a little tired from the long day of school, the motion of the bus is lulling her to sleep, and she may be a little hungry, most kids that age still snack after school. Ask her mom to send a snack for her to eat on the bus afterschool. A carbohydrate may be just the thing to get up blood sugar up enough to make the trip home, plus it will give her something to focus her attention on, so she won't get bored and fall asleep. If you have a long ride home, wait until she starts to nod off, then pull a snack out. A shorter ride, give her the snack as soon as you start moving.

Being in vehicles can be like an automatic sleep inducing button for a lot of kids! The motion just lulls them to sleep. I would get a different child on the bus every day to sit with her and read to each other or play a game together to occupy her during the bus ride. Good way for the kid to interact with each other too.

It sounds like she is not getting the sleep she needs at home. Have you asked her mother about bedtime? Maybe she has trouble sleeping at night. She also might just not be a morning child! lol. She might also have a medical condition causing her to not stay awake..unless this is only a morning thing of course.

I would stay away from reading to her...that would put me to sleep as well. Try something wear she must focus and interact with you...like teaching her how to tie her shoes. Maybe you can ask her about her favorite songs and sing some together. Talk to her about the cartoons she likes to watch, ask her who her favorite character is and why.

After Christmas, ask her what she got and which is her favorite....things like that. Children love to explain something they are interested in, so find that interest and keep her talking! When you do, she'll stay awake. ;-)

Hope that helps. Good luck. Happy holidays!

Since she's special needs, is she small enough to go into a restraint system like a Star seat? (Think large car seat like for toddlers) They strap into the bus seat, and have a lap belt, and shoulder restraint. Last I heard, they went up to a size to accomadate a 50 lb child?? Present it as a situation that you fear for her safety, and in such a restraint, she'd be safe to sleep if she wanted to, there'd be no fear of her falling while sleeping.

I never heard of anything even remotely like this. You said something about special needs, Does this kid have some kind of problems with her mind and perhaps on medication? That may be the answer but you would have a better idea about that than anyone else. Please check it out.

Speak to her parents. She might not be getting enough sleep at home. Or you can just wake her up when you arrive at school.
