There is every possibility of going mad in the path to enlightenment. A small mistake then everything can go wrong. But after enlightenment he can not go mad. Because now he is no more in mind.

Perhaps that's what delusion of Maya.

Here one story of the Sage Narad (Can we consider him as Enlightened? doesn't know, but perhaps he is beyond the ordnary)

One day Sage Narad and Lord Krishna were walking along together. Narad asked the Lord, "Can you show me a glimpse of your Maya, the Ultimate Delusion".

Lord Krishna just smiled and kept on walking with Narad. In between, the Lord asked Narad, "Oh! Narad, I am feeling so thirsty. Please get me some water from the near by house.

Narad went into the house, and was there a very beautiful lady. Narad was so attracted to that lady that he asked her to marry him. He forgot of Lord Krishna and lived with this beautiful girl enjoying all the pleasures and pains of running the family life well. Many years passed by, they had a few children and the life went on. Suddenly there was a flood in that area and Narad's house just got washed away in that flood along with his wife and children also drifting away in the fierce flow. Narad was holding on to a tree that seemed stable and while holding on to one of its braches swimming hard to stay alive and lamenting over the death of his wife and children.

Suddenly Narad felt a soft hand upon his soulders and the soft voice of Lord Krishna enquired, "Narad why are you trying to swim in the air and where is the water I asked for just now ?"

Now Narad had a glimpse of the Lord's Ultimate Delusion, The Maya spanning several years within some seconds.

Here the Sathya Sai Thought for the Day,

It is not possible to consider Creation and the Creator, Nature and God as different or separate from each other. Just as the bubble is born in water, stays on water and disappears in water, so too the Cosmos is born in the Absolute, exists as a part of the Absolute and merges back in the Absolute. Recognise the truth that just as the bubble cannot be conceived without water, the Cosmos cannot be conceived without God.

That happen only in case if you want 'moksha'. Everyone worship Him for own desires may be worldly or opp.
Moksha is getting rid of your coming back to this world and what about the deeds done in the past. One has to face all the difiiculties(result of wrong deeds) of his coming lives in the present life.
That's why they have to face more than anyone.
