To get a proper perspective on this there are various theories:
1. There is a sole Creator who created all (mainstream christianity)
2. There are two opposite forces who together created the universe (maneic heresy)
3. There is one supreme source, but a lesser source created our universe (Gnostic heresy)
4. There are many lesser creators who are still creating our universe, but their power is bound by greater creators (satanic heresy)

Each of these view gives Creation a different purpose. My observations lead me to believe that number four, the satanic heresy, is closest to the truth. The implied purpose for us would be to become greater creators ourselves by becoming more like the first Creator in power, but personally I would like to add we need to become more Godlike in harmony as well, otherwise our growth will stagnate and our creations falter. In this way the universe has as it purpose to multiply the number of higher beings through a proces of creating lesser beings and organic growth of these being. So the universe is kind of like a nursery where infants become grown ups.

Greetings!

The only reason that God knows that is, is because God made a desition to split into inumerible parts; and these parts are called Souls, and as we exspress our Self, God realizes its Self even more so. God just has to know all, be all, and expierence all that it is. God doesnt NEED or WANT anything. Nothing can be added or taken away from Pure Goodness. So, there is no profit. God just decided to LOVE TO BE and HAVE ALL IT CAN BE.

Upanishads say "Ekohum Bahusyam".

Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba says, "To love and get loved I myself became Many."

Here the Sathya Sai Thought for the Day,

It is not possible to consider Creation and the Creator, Nature and God as different or separate from each other. Just as the bubble is born in water, stays on water and disappears in water, so too the Cosmos is born in the Absolute, exists as a part of the Absolute and merges back in the Absolute. Recognise the truth that just as the bubble cannot be conceived without water, the Cosmos cannot be conceived without God.

I don't have an answer for this question. "Investment" is a two side word in your question but even if you asked "why did God create us and what is in it for him? I would still be at a loss for an answer, however either way I am glad I exist and that's enough for me.

I'm not sure he would look at it like that.

I would suggest that he would look at it as any parent would their children. You raise them without trying to be too overbearing, all the while watching them become their OWN person. It's a lot of work, patience, and investment, yet it is rewarding to see them GROW and RETURN your love.

Sometimes our children fight, but it is part of growing up. If we intervene at every turn, how will they ever grow, learn, and appreciate their own innate gifts?
