Whoa there! Some of you are way ahead of yourselves.
I'm Australian. At this stage, our Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, is sending Coast Guard officials to the Southern Ocean on board a Navy ship. The sole purpose is to video and photograph the activities of the Japanese on board their boats, to gather whatever information they can to take to the Whaling commission at their next mission.

Australia is in no way interested in a full blown war here, we are at the stage of getting any information that we can. If any japanese boats try to attack or board the any Australian boat, navy or governmental, the Australian Navy, with soldiers and Coast Guard officials will take charge and dissolve the situation. In this situation, the Australian Navy will have the upper hand as the Japanese wil be in Australian Governed waters and we will not take any illegal activity lightly.

This apparent agreement that the American Mr Schipper mentioned, had been discounted by a senior Japanese official, so it really doesn't matter at this stage. Either the American's jumped the gun, or the Japanese don't want to be see to have becked down and therefore, 'lose'. They are very proud people.

Hopefully, the Aussie Navy can capture any illegal activity on film and use this to change the existing laws, with regards to Whaling. If no negative information is gathered, the Australian Government might decide to go to the courts regardless.

Interms of Australian losing any war between the two countries, again, it will not come to that. If it did, we would have enormous backing from several countries around the world. Japan would be dealt with very efficiently.

Whether Whaling will cease one day, is still wishful thinking to a big degree. At least though, more positive efforts are being made by senior members such as PM Kevin Rudd. With this added support to the cause of banning Whaling, we are certainly in the best possible position that we have been in a long time, to change this disgusting and disgraceful act of arrogance.

First of all.... To say that killing Whales, or Dolphins, or Human beings is barbaric would be subjective.

Yes, it is true that Japanese whaling of the Minke Whales has caused much controversy (outside of Japan). But war would not stop whaling, and it would cripple both countries, and create a deep rift between Japan and the West. In Japan, whaling is actually part of the nation's culture, and it has been done since at least the 8th century, look it up if you don't believe me.

The fact that some human beings have decided that it is "wrong" or "barbaric" is largely due to the impending extinction of several species of the Whale. The problem, however, is not just in the hunting of the animal, though that doesn't help. This species would not be so easy to save, as say, the Bald Eagle was. There are changing environmental factors that have to be considered, and keep in mind that Japan is not the only nation that hunts the whale...

"Stand and teach the Japanese a lesson". What exactly do you mean by THAT? There are better ways to mediate environmental disputes that would be far more productive than war.

Article 9 of Japan's Constitution forbids the act of declaring war, or using force to mediate international disputes. Japan does have a Defense Force, and it is more than capable of puting up a fight in response to an attack by Australian Armed Forces.

But why even ask about this? Australia cannot attack Japan, unless it intends to forfeit its membership to ANZUS. Australia cannot afford to do this. That would be like the US pulling out of NATO to start a war with Switzerland over the poor treatment of workers in swiss Cocao Orchards in Africa. There are better ways to fix the problem, you know?

The sad thing is that many species of Whale really are on the brink of extinction. Not only are they mammals, like us, it apears that they are an intelligent animal, just like us. I do think it would be a shame if they were to die off, and only be known by future generations by their picture in a book or a film. That would be sad indeed. I would not try to justify the killing of any mammal, inclding the human, but I must say this:

Our Second-Generation star is middle-aged right now. Eventually, as it grows warmer (and larger), life will not be able to thrive here, as Sol expands to overtake our orbit. Then, our star will contract, and possibly supernova, and any sign of humanity (or the whale) will cease to exist in our planetary system. So unless we plan to transplant every species on this planet to another solar system, some will die. If not all of them. We cannot survive her either. It is very sad for me to know this, but it is true.

That asside, I have to agree with you that something should be done (in my opinion). I think that international waters should somehow be regulated, perhaps changing the maritime borders of the island nations of the South Pacific. That way, Japanese whaling boats will simply not be permitted to stray into the "new" Australian maritime borders. This won't stop them from Whaling, but if enough nations in the pacific do this, it will slow them down, if force is implied. I'm not sure it's possible, but it's the only thing I can see working, besides the normal diplomatic channels that we are already using.

Australia has a very small military without the ability to invade a country like Japan. Japan on the other hand even though their constitution says they cannot go to war, it does not say it cannot defend itself. The Japanese Defense Force is quite formidable. Their Air Force has similar aircraft as Australia (American Made) but they upgrade and fly theirs regularly. At one of Australia's Air Force Bases there is a squadron of 6 FB-111s. If lucky they fly once a month.

If Australia attacks Japan. Japan would win and the whaling would continue. A soldiers life is not worth saving a whale. I think that saving whales is important, collect the whole set. But never at the cost of human life.

NO WAY JOSE

Australia is under resourced for a war of its own; and we don't declare war - we follow!!!!

We would probably not win. Japan has a constitution that prohibits war; but they are more resourced than Australia.

I think the battle is being won anyway.

And, I doubt Japan would be interested in p1$$1nG Oz off at all - we have the raw materials they need.

I think the problem with the "scientific" harvesting of whales is pure commercial greed for the meat and blubber resources.

Does whales more important than man?!

Perhaps, you should consider man is more important than whales. If a whales can save hundreds of man, it is worthwhile.

Australian should never engage in war with Japan due to whales.

Not really.

If foreign companies are whaling in our waters, all you need to do is enforce Australian law - seize the ships and intern the crew. It may take the Royal Australian Navy to do it, but it's definitely preferable to getting all of Japan involved and resorting to violence.
