Everyone gave you good suggestions already. But I just wanted to say, I'm so glad to see this question here! People who visit NYC frequently do all kinds of touristy things, but don't really get to see the City. You have a much better idea of what it is like to be a tourist in NYC!!!
By all means, walk across a few bridges (BTW, NOTHING can beat the walk across the Brooklyn Bridge!) Have a great time, and enjoy our beautful City!

I jog across the George Washington Bridge almost everyday. The view is breathtaking. On a clear day or night you can even see as far as the Tappen Zee Bridge.

The Manhattan & Willamsburg Bridges are also quite scenic plus both have subway trains that operate over them. Makes for an interesting walk.

It’ll take you maybe 15-20 minutes to get across the Brooklyn Bridge on foot. I hope you are up for it and arrive with good walking shoes and a warm coat.
You can look at http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/bridges/bridges.shtml for som other bridges.
Have fun,
Steve

If you have time for one more bridge, I'd recommend Williamsburg...one end is near the bagel and pickle shops of the Lower East Side, the other lets you out near the shops and restaurants of Williamsburg. But as described above, there are many, many bridges, so you have lots of options.
