I became curious when my friend said they should be bigger at the bottom. Is there a particular reason?

Yes.... they should be bigger at the bottom..
this is so u are able to get Ur hand inside to wash the milk or whatever out of it..
if it were smaller then u could not do so..
when purchasing them.... keep this in mind..
nothing like a dirty glass or cup u are drinking out of being dirty when ur taking a drink...

Well, I think if cups were fat on top and bottom, they would be ugly (in my opinion) and awkward to hold.
I bought some cups that are slender on top and on bottom. They are pretty, but they are too small around the top and my nose rubs up against them sometimes when I drink. They are fairly comfortable to hold, but again, kind of small for long fingers.
You can always find comfortable a place to hold on cups that are small on bottom and big one top. We like the way they look. And yor nose doesn't rub, hit or touch the rim.

could you imagine cleaning a cup that had a small top and a wide bottom trying to get your hand in it to clean it. it would be like trying to stick you hand in a coke bottle
