He usually smells like powder, but from last night, first he did not eat his dinner, then during his sleep, he jumped a couple of times and I noticed a horrible smell coming from him. His mouth started to dribble terribly and he won`t let us hold him, plus he is whinning from time to time.

I have tried searching the Internet, but have found nothing of help.

We will only take him to the vet, if it is necessary, as we believe in self healing upto a certain point.

Would really appreciate knowing what is going on.

I do thank all of you for responding!

However, I have to say that self-healing does happen in a cat! Think about the wild cat - he HAS no choice but to look after himself!

If I did not care about him, why would I have lost points in posing a question?

For those that answered who judged me, you only have a few sentances to go by! In actual fact, we have 2 cats; 2 dogs and chickens and the reason why we hesitate to go to the vet is, first we live in France and secondly, it is VERY expensive. Lastly, we take very good care of our animals; you just have to look at them to know this.

I HATE seeing ANYONE or THING in pain and lastly, if we had children, I would not rush to the doctor; I would rather wait for a while, as most children recover on their own.

So, please, to those who think I am a bad animal keeper, do not judge on something you know nothing about!

I asked a question for help, not for redicule.

And to all: My husband is at this moment with the vet.

To all who showed concern.

Our cat has an alcer in his mouth, which was causing the bad smell.

He is now taking antibiotics (no easy thing with a cat), to remove the problem.

He is still not eating, but, we think it is due to the pain of eating rather than because he is off his food!

Many thanks for so many replies.

!!Don't panick, BUT, Dont Wait Until The Morning!!! Look up a local Animal Hospital, Shelter or even you Vet Clinic(or any) will have a 24- hour personell available! Don't brush this aside, most vets will be able to tell you if this could be life threatening from the symptoms you have given over the phone in a few minutes! Know where your cat has been (is he in-door only, could he have been attacked, into poisonous items outside/inside home(look around in areas where cat has had access to) how old is he/she, has he/she had regular check-ups/ shots, etc. Please don't panick but also don't go through the night without checking with a local animal agency. It may take a few calls (even if you have to call someone 30 miles away!!) it's at the least just a phone call to make sure it's not an emergency! Just call around to be safe. Best of luck

Cats love food, if they don't eat it usually means something is wrong with them.

You must take him to the vet ASAP, self healing is okay if you know what is wrong but only your vet can help you diagnose what your kitty has!

Personally, I think he may have an internal injury like he's been hit by a car or attacked. As he won't let you hold him, he's jumpy and won't eat. The dribbling and smell are possibly a side effect of the stress.

Cats are well known for their ability to hide pain - it's part of their survival instinct. So if your cat is whining, then he most definitely should be seen by a vet as he must be feeling pretty bad.

Please do the responsible thing and call the vet today.

I hope it's nothing serious and that he will be okay very soon.

May be kidney failure - one of the symptoms is excess saliva and water vomit.
Check the Internet for the other symptoms
There is also the possibility that he has ingested something toxic. If he has had access to rat poison, for example, he could be suffering internal hemorrhaging.
Don't forget that the holiday period is coming up - should he worsen over the Christmas weekend it is going to be far more difficult (and expensive) to get veterinary attention at the drop of a hat.

i'm sorry to say that idon't think this is a self healing thing, it sounds really bad take him to the vet he might have an inturnal injury from being hit by a care or something or rabies. i think your putting him through a lot of pain by not taking him to the vets and if you don't ASAP your cat might not make it through another night . hope he gets better x
P.S he could have cat flu did he have his injections as a kitty because one of my cats didn't and now he is on medication and you can't cure it it's really sad.

I think we all agree here that the cat needs medical attention.
You're not taking the kitty cat just because of a scratch. This needs attention and knowledge beyond what you can offer at home.
Think of the cat's health please. Take him to the vet.

"We will only take him to the vet, if it is necessary, as we believe in self healing upto a certain point" and does your cat hold these beliefs as well? NO. He relies on you to be responsible and get him the care that he needs. This is ridiculous.

Take him the the vet straight away. What is this self healing rubbish, animals should be treated with respect, if it was a child it would have been down the doctors in no time. A animal should be treated no differently.!

When a cat is drooling, it is usually time to take it to a vet. Cats dont stop eating unless they are ill. Don't wait till it is too late.
