I woke up and the emotion felt so real, does anyone know what this may mean?

The person I dreamt about was my ex, he treated me really badly, so i feel nothing for him anymore so this made the dream seem all the more bizarre.

You feel that this person is drowning emotionally for some reason, look over your friend's life, and see if you can find a reason for you to feel this way about it, it could be a family relationship that is suffocating her, or a destructive romantic relationship, or something like alcohol or drugs... That she dies in your dream could be an indication that she can pass through the situation to a new phase in her life....

Dreams can mean a lot of different things, but don't take them at face value. The most important thing about a dream is what it means to you. Why did it make you feel the way you do?

Maybe you are afraid of losing that person... You must care about them a lot. Let them know how you feel! I hope they can help you feel better.

ignore the dream itself and just look at the emotion it left behind and think it through. Dreams are just dreams, its not a premonition about anything but the emotions you are feeling may be emotions you are supressing over another issue.
