A dream is a story that you tell yourself, about yourself. The story is told in symbols. The symbols are a kind of shorthand designed to convey an entire concept in a short amount of time. This is necessary because we address an enormous amount of material over night, and as we sift through every thing that occurred during the day, to break it all down into words would take too long. All symbols have multiple meanings, some of the meanings are universal, sometimes the meaning is specific only to you, based on your past experiences. Death is often a symbol of a passage from one phase of life to another. You don't say how old you and your sister are, but I often see dreams posted here where a child has reached adulthood, and ready to take care of herself, and dreams that her mother dies. This is often an acknowledgment that the child is ready to take care of herself, and also that the mother is beginning a new phase in her life as well. She will always be "Mom", but as the child matures and moves on to college, marriage, and a home of her own, Mom gets the opportunity to re-define her life as well. She stops having her time tied up in taking care of children and gets to re-frame her identity as a woman, and continue on to new things herself.... This sort of dream also carries a message for the child, who has matured to a place of being able to stand on her own, and no longer needing a mom to be there watching over her anymore....we continue to need our elders, but their role in our life changes from caretakers to more like advisers, and they take on new lives of their own....

Dreams carry messages but they certainly don't carry real life messages. Your sister had a dream about that because it was a nightmare about one of her worst fears: loss of a parent. This is an easy observation and i'm sure next time you will determine dreams with similiar results.

Some people tend to say that dreams are just your subconscious talking to you in a way you'll understand.

Others might tell you that they're divine messages from God/ess' that should be taken seriously.

It's your own personal belief that truly matters, and what you do with the information running through your head. Who knows, maybe dreaming about it will prevent it.. maybe it'll cause it.

I think dreams carry some subconscious meaning. For instance, I often would dream of losing my teeth...and during that time I suffered from great tooth aches and needed my wisdom teeth pulled.

The dream will not indicate something that will actually happening or is happening...however, may carry some sort of significance..for instance, maybe your sister is afraid of losing something or maybe she and your mom are having some sort of falling out.

no one could know that, but some people believe so.usually book writers just write that to make a o\lot of money by fooling people.you should trust in what you think.if you had a dream about your mom dying, you think what this could mean.i suggest that you try to enjoy your life more, and start having fun(you, your sister and your mother.)who knows, life's too short.

Yes dreams are carrier of messages , that warns us to be careful . It depends also if you are very worried of something, sometimes , dreams appeared to be abstract ,and scary .If the person is superstitious , dreams could have meaning too.
Example if she/he dreams of riding in a boat, it means somebody will die , (boat resembles a coffin), if you loose your teeth in dream, one of your closest relative will die, dreaming of dog biting you , there would be a danger of confrontations, flying in dreams means you wanted to reach your ambition etc.....these things applies only of course to people who believe in superstitions.

dreams are your subconscious talking to you. Though the dream may not have a direct meaning- try interpreting it. Our dreams allow us an outlet to many suppressed feelings and fears.

does your mom smoke? Drink? overstressed? or has an illness?

sometimes whats going on in the world affects what your really thinking or actually worrying about... sometimes its your brain telling you what your deep most thoughts and worries are..

however in my culture we have specific interpretations like if there is a funeral that means that someone in the family is getting married... and things of that sort

Death in dreams usually means the end of something, not so much a literal death.

As someone mentioned it could be your subconcious is dealing with the fear of losing your parent.
