rock them untill theyre out of the house and in college if it comforts them and lets them know you love them.

My son is 14 months old and we still rock him at night. I don't think there is a specific age... it is a transition and when they're ready, or you're ready, you start the transition.
My son is getting to the point where we only rock for 5 minutes and he is asleep, and he goes to nap without rocking so I guess we're already slowly transitioning away from this. When he was little we'd rock for 30 minutes or more (I was breastfeeding.)

Two hours. Possibly a little less.
Seriously, there is no need to rock a baby to sleep. They can go to sleep just fine on their own, and all you do is create a dependency which can be very difficult to break.
I remain eternally grateful that I was sufficiently sore after my C-section that I couldn't put my daughter down gently enough for her to stay asleep. So she was always laid down awake and fell asleep by herself.

I think the question is less about them and more about when *you* are ready for your kids to fall asleep on their own.
They're not going to learn to sleep on their own until you teach them how to do it. Depending on their ages, there are all sorts of things you can do to help them transition into sleeping on their own.

I'm 13 and my best friend's mom still rock me to sleep somtimes. I don't think there is an age limit. Just as long as the child enjoys it than why wouldn't you stop?

It is different for every baby/child. Rock them as long as they need it. Soon enough you will WISH your child wanted to be rocked to sleep. They grow up fast enough as it is. Don't force it to be even faster.

i never did it with my son..i knew he'd get used to it..and i also know it is a hard habbit to break..so he learnt self soothing since a he was a newborn pretty much..and it was a good choice i made...because i have no trouble with him going to sleep.
