For me it was the Air Force.
I loved airplanes and the people who flew and maintained them, and I have a good 40 plus years of memories of being around this service.
But, hands down, the most important U.S. military service is the Army. It goes in and does the dirty work, and much of what the Air Force does supports the Army. I am proudest of the work I helped do to support the Army.
Every service is important. The Navy plays a vital role in projecting national power worldwide. The Air Force depends on the Navy to transport fuel and munitions, and most Air Force people have very high respect for Naval aviation.
The Marine Corps is an incredible service--part of the Navy Department, small but highly effective as an offensive ground force with its own close air support and tactical airlift resources.
We kid around a lot, but any servicemember worth anything has great respect for our sister services. And we're grateful for every bit of support we get from them and happy to give every bit of support we can in return.

It never ceases to amaze me, the amount of people who look at things in black and white.
The United States military exists for one purpose: to win America's wars.
Each specific service branch...
United States Army
United States Marine Corps
United States Navy
United States Air Force
United States Coast Guard
...serves a specific mission to fulfill and has been created by the U.S. Congress in order to meet specific requirements of the War Department (later Department of Defense). There is no "best military branch", each is an integral part of the military.

I am prejudice when it comes to this question only because I have been serving and am presently in Iraq with the US Navy. Now I appreciate the other responses about the other services and I respect all of my fellow brothers and sisters-in-arms. But everyone knows that the Navy does it all! (land,SEA, and air) While the Marines are very good at what they do, they can't deny that they need a lift from us to get to their mission. (and we gladly provide it......TEAM WORK). I have been very fortunate in my Navy career because I've received some of the best training for any situation in the world (can't go into detail). I also have been all over the world, with the exception of the North and South Pole. Having said all of that, I think if your looking for a variety of things you can do in the Armed Forces..........then my NAVY is the place to be! It truly is "not just a job, it's an adventure".

This one all comes down to personal bias. And I'm ex Royal Navy.
Lets see. The Royal Navy is the only non special unit service that practises fast roping from helicopters
We have the ability to project power over a wider area than anything ashore, assuming the Government stop f*cking about with our carriers.
At the same time we aren't limited like a conventional airforce because our airfield has a huge range in it's own right.
And hey, we don't get killed as often. Because practically no one has a decent fleet, and everyone is scared shitless of nuclear attack subs.... note, that's not nuclear armed, that's nuclear powered.
And our anti sub ships (Type 23's) can find anyone's little boats, even those who are meant to be practically unfindable. Why? Because we're bloody good at it.
Ok so it's a piddly little fleet these days, but it's still bloody good at what it does.

Definitely the U.S. Marines, and here is why.
In a combat sense the Marines are better, because they are the only force that is completely self sustainable. They have their own air wing with both fixed wing aircraft and helicopters, and one incredible ground attack unit. They are better trained and more disciplined than any other branch. Their uniforms are far better looking than any other branch. They are the only U.S. force that the President can utilize for combat operations without congress' war declaration approval. They have a very rich tradition that is taught and lived by every preson serving, which adds to the pride of being one of the few. They accomplish more, with less personnel, I say this because there are only aproximately 200,000 Marines. That is far smaller in size than any other branch of the U.S. military. If the Army goes into combat, they need the Air Force to provide air cover, the Marines have their own, if the Air Force goes into combat, they need the Army to take and hold the ground they just bombed. The Marines have it all, and look the best doing it. The answer is definately the U.S. Marines.
Edit:
Kilroy, I'll give you the medical sort of. We have the corpsman attached right to our units. So they are of a different branch, but we don't need the Navy as a whole like the Army needs the Air Force. Also the Navy provides transportation to us, but it is not the only mode for us. We do have cargo aircraft that can transport. So I'll give it to you, but not completely.

There is no "best" for everyone... it depends what you're looking for in a career. If you want to have a job where you can still maintain a decent family life, don't get deployed for *too* long, and will probably get a "thinking" job, then the Air Force is best. If you want to get deployed, are less interested in being able to see your family, and would like to do more "Hooah" stuff like go to the range, then join the Army. Honestly, it really does depend what you want out of the military.

well i really depends on what you want to do. all branches have their goods and bads. If you are thinking of joining you'll need to write down your goals and then decide which branch fits those goal.

Marines are not self-sustainable. They rely on the Navy for all transportation and logistics, as well as medical support, funding, equipment and nearly everything else.

The Army fights and wins Americas wars.
The Army does longer deployments and takes up most of the share of hardship in war time.
So the Marines can go back on their tropical cruse.
