To target those hard to reach areas of the stomach and sides you need to do what is called an oblique crunch. I have included a web page that will help you understand how to do this sort of crunch. There are many variations to these types of exercise but this page has a few good ones I like to do.

If you really want to target your sides do this crunch variation. lay on your back then twist at the waist so that your legs are on the floor (knees together and still bent in crunch style. then do crunches as you would normally making sure to keep your shoulders parralel to the ground.. alternate sides and voila! beautifully sculpted sides

Doing exercise builds muscle, so you shouldn't work your sides if you want them to be smaller. Instead, do 'core' exercises like "the plank" which is where you get like on the ground and then boost yourself up on your elbows and feet and keep your body straight. Try to build up to where you can do it for an entire minute. Pilates exercises will help, too.
