I live in BC, Canada and here the cabs meter goes up by time. The longer the ride the more it costs. I can't see that being the way it is in cities like New York where traffic is so bad. It would cost a fortune to go a few blocks. Can anyone tell me how the meter goes up there? Is it based on the distance you drive?

The following is from the NYC Taxi and Limo Comission -

Metered Rate of Fare
$2.50 upon entry
$0.40 for each additional unit
The unit fare is:

one-fifth of a mile, when the taxicab is traveling at 6 miles an hour or more; or

60 seconds when not in motion or traveling at less than 12 miles per hour.

Night surcharge of $.50 after 8:00 PM & before 6:00 AM

Peak hour Weekday Surcharge of $1.00 Monday - Friday after 4:00 PM & before 8:00 PM

It true, taxis here work by the meter. So going a few blocks in a city with the worst traffic can be a fortune. The best way for you to go a few blocks is by walking, taking the bus or the subway.

Yes, taxi meters are based on distance in NYC, usually yards/miles. Oh, you should try the subways or walking, it is much cheaper. Also, check the cab driver's rate chart and license (it is required by law to be displayed).

Distance and time. They tick over if traffic isn't moving.
