It's fine, you'll never know unless you give it a try, nothings wrong with that :)

How much younger? If he's under 18 or fresh out of high school & you are much older then I'd be very careful. Sometimes age matters in terms of maturity & personal development. You may want things he's not ready for.

I'd also be careful of the fact you work with his mother. That could help you out, but it could also make it incredibly awkward if she doesn't approve of you, you break up, or if the two of you (him & you) have a fight. Make sure that everyone involved is mature enough to handle this & that (if you want to keep the job) your job won't be compromised.

Now with the warnings aside, why don't you go for it? You won't know unless you try!

Just give it a try and see what happens next. This is one way to remove his shyness and it's good for you to be a little more free in conversation.
There's another side you have to take care of before you lose a friend in his mother , who is your colleague.
Strike balance between these two.Remain a good girl and talk wit him initially just casually to know his name , his likings, what he does , his ambition etc.Don't show great interest in him.Just observe his next step and you will be able to make up your mind a little later.
