Apparently some people think atheism means being a total materialist. Others (including myself) see it as more like pantheism. That is, there is a spiritual life, but there is no Big Boss Daddy sort of God. The word "God" could maybe be applied to the universe itself, which is pantheism. So am I inconsistent to say I believe in human souls but I am an atheist?

I say, I agree with you. More or less. I think the problem is in the definition of atheist, though. Most people correlate being an atheist means, there is no spirit, no god, no afterlife, no nothing the end goodbye have a nice life. Perhaps calling yourself something else? or just trying to change the definition. (much harder, btw)

I think what you are is Agnostic. You believe that there is a spiritual plane but that nobody can really know the truth about this spiritual plane from here in the physical?

It depends. If you believe your faith to be right according to your criteria, that's your way. God would let you do what you choose to.
