I have a small bump on my cheek that my dr said was a sebaceous cyst. About a year ago he said to squeeze it to keep the size down, at the time squeezing would make a small amount of smelly oil come out, but now squeezing makes some whitish cottage-cheese like substance (also smelly) come out. The doc told me that it would be very hard to find a plastic surgeon that would operate on it because it was very hard to avoid scarring in that area. My question is whether I should keep on with the periodic squeezing or if I should go in to see the doctor again?

You should stop squeezing it. Go to a dermatologist and have him treat it. It's possible that it could be drained with a needle and not an incision, it's possible that it could be injected with a steroid and make it shrink up.

The benefit of going to a skin doc over a family doc is that the derm doc sees hundreds of cysts every week and knows what works and what doesn't work for treating them.

But, before then, you can use hot compresses on the cyst. get a wash cloth and run it under hot water and press it against the bump. Careful not to scald your face! Continue this for about 15 minutes. It will cause the cyst to open up and drain a bit on its own.

My Dear Friend, squeezing those things is never a solution it will first of all spread the infection in the area around itself as that oil also is infected with bacteria.
Moreover, squeezing will give you scars more often than not, so immediately go to a Dermatologist let him treat you completely remove that bump for sure.
Regards,
Amit.

Your doctor is on the ball when it comes to the most up to date management of an epidermoid (sebaceous )cyst.
--------------------------
Yup,
Here is the recommended procedure.
----
The minimal excision technique for epidermoid cyst removal is less invasive than complete surgical excision and does not require suture closure. The procedure is easy to learn, and most physicians experienced in skin surgery can perform the procedure after three to five precepted sessions. It involves making a 2- to 3-mm incision, expressing the cyst contents through compression and extracting the cyst wall through the incision.

Go back to him or her and tell him your concerns, he can excise the gland himself and leave a small "pit" as a scar if you would rather not deal with the syst anymore.

Now that it has drained it should start going down. Depending on how big it was, that could take a day or two. What you did will help and should keep it from getting infected. Since you're seeing the doctor tomorrow, point it out to him and he can tell you anything different you need to do.
