Laughably, Joseph Smith’s successor, Brigham Young, claimed that Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery returned the “gold plates” to the “angel”—and that the hill “Cumorah” opened up in order to reveal a magical cave. The cave was a “large, spacious room,” filled with “gold plates” that could’ve filled many wagons. There was also a “table” and the “sword of Laban”.... Do Mormons actually BUY this crap?! Do they really believe that this story is true?! The Mormon Church should allow a team of archeologists—whether Mormon or non-Mormon—to excavate and discover this “cave-room” and its “contents”—the “gold plates” and the “sword of Laban”.... Wouldn’t that prove that Joseph Smith was—and is—the “prophet of the restoration”...? Wouldn’t that PROVE that The Book of Mormon is a true “ancient record”? Wouldn’t this discovery be the “find of the century”?!

The heavenly angel who first presented their location to Joseph Smith, again took them back. Where there are now, it is not known. However, at some future time (my own opinion) that is in God's will, they may be shown again. Not all of the golden plates were translated. There was a sealed section that Joseph Smith did not have access to.

In Joseph Smith's own words... "At length the time arrived for obtaining the plates, the Urim and Thummim, and the breastplate. On the twenty-second day of September, one thousand eight hundred and twenty-seven, having gone as usual at the end of another year to the place where they were deposited, the same heavenly messenger delivered them up to me with this charge: That I should be responsible for them; that if I should let them go carelessly, or through any neglect of mine, I should be cut off; but that if I would use all my endeavors to preserve them, until he, the messenger, should call for them, they should be protected.

“I soon found out the reason why I had received such strict charges to keep them safe, and why it was that the messenger had said that when I had done what was required at my hand, he would call for them. For no sooner was it known that I had them, than the most strenuous exertions were used to get them from me. Every stratagem that could be invented was resorted to for that purpose. The persecution became more bitter and severe than before, and multitudes were on the alert continually to get them from me if possible. But by the wisdom of God, they remained safe in my hands, until I had accomplished by them what was required at my hand. When, according to arrangements, the messenger called for them, I delivered them up to him; and he has them in his charge until this day, being the second day of May, one thousand eight hundred and thirty-eight.”

The Lord had an angel take them so that no one could profit from them. The Book of Mormon has not been disproven in nearly 200 years, you're not going to do it here.

I remember reading a book that Joseph Smith, the founder of the Church, gave it back to an angel named Moroni. But it doesn't matter whether he kept it to show to the public since you still would have made fun of it. Even though I'm not a Mormon, it's kinda annoying seeing person like you being sarcastic with others religions. (By the way, $cientology is an exception.)

They could be sitting in a museum for all to see and you still would call them a fake or a forgery or just a fairy tale, so does it really matter to you?

They were taken away by an angel.

We're not sure where they are...

Some people think they were taken to Heaven, some think they were put back in their original resting place. We don't know for sure.
