I babysit an 18 month old and she will litterally hold a bite of food in her mouth for an hour until she either chokes on it or spits it out on my carpet. What can I do? She's not my kid and I never had this problem with my children. Her parents are less than concerned with the fact that she does this but I am sick of having spit filled mush food on my carpet. What can I do to stop her from this or to get her to swallow that last bite? I have tried making her sit in her high chair until she swallows but she doesn't care.

it's always the last bite she takes. she won't swallow the last bite for whatever reason. She does this same thing for her parents and they think it's funny. I don't think it's funny having her spit her food out on my carpet.

My son use to do this but he never spit it out on the floor. He would look like a chipmunk.. I guess he was just saving it for later. I would suggest that if she is bound and determined to hold it in her mouth then get a piece of paper towel and make her open up and get it out of her mouth the best way you can. Or maybe just don't feed her the last bite anymore.

Hahahaha! I am laughing because I could have wrote this today. Same scenerio. It's been 3 days of this. It's not that she is being forced to eat anything. It's the last bite she feeds herself. My concern is it is right before nap time and I don't want to lay her down with food in her mouth as a safety precaution. I have fished out the food (she won't willingly spit it out). Today I tried to wait it out. She can wait a long time. Mom thinks it's funny. I'm responsible for her and don't want her choking during nap. Next step puree her food LOL Just kidding.

Don't worry about the last bite.
It is UNIMPORTANT.

And an 18 month old BABY has no understanding of what "rebellion" means, or how to rebel at all.

What exactly is this "piece of food"? Steak? Applesauce?
(how could she keep applesauce for an entire hour in her mouth, then choke on it?)

What I am getting at is that possibly the food is in too large a piece for her to manage.

If you are sick of having spit and food on your carpet, I'd say it is seriously time to close down your babysitting business.
Anyone who loves kids and loves to CARE for them couldn't care less about a piece of food (or 100 pieces of food) on their floor.

You are looking at it as rebellion. Have you thought about changing the rules on her? Tell her today you have to have a certain number of bites and that's all. Don't tell her the number, and when you see she has about enough for the last bite - tell her that's all she's suppose to eat today. The next day make it be 3 bites only. And the next 7. Keep her guessing. If she only does it on the last bite of food, she can't do it if she doesn't know which is the last bite.

my baby does the same ..that means he is full and does not want more.....I think it is funny too...just cover the whole carpet with a picnic rug..that is what I have done..my whole carpet has bits and stains all over the place....I would get upset first but I do not care anymore

Just take the food away before she can have that last bite.

You are getting paid to babysit, not to retrain the child. If it doesn't bother the parents, leave it alone. If it bothers you too much, get another job.

Tell her parents that you don't like it when she does that, or don't make her eat so much, she doesn't need every single bite.

Why on earth are you making her eat when she is obviously full?!
