She has actually tried to come between me and my Son. Tells him that she wants to come out when he comes to visit me (in another state), but that she won't spend time with him and I. She doesn't know anyone out here, so it's an obvious attempt to just make him feel guilty. She's mad at me because I told her to let him think for himself. I got sick of her actually bragging about how she can control him. My Son is way to smart for this. I don't neccesarily want him to leave her as much as I want him to have some back bone and let her know she can't control him. Am I wrong and being over protective? Please don't be mean with your responses. This is my only kid, and even though he is a young man I still worry about his happiness and welfare.

At this point, your son is an adult, let him make his own mistakes. If you speak against her to him, he will defend her and then date her just to prove he can. Just say, "Son, I love you and you have to live your own life." Then shut up. Do NOT give this woman more ammunition.

Im sorry to hear of your dilemma. However, your son is an adult and there isn't much you can do. He will just have to learn the hard way. Many young women in relationships feel like they have to be in control because they are trying to compete with the woman that has been the number one love of "their man" for all of his life. It's a difficult thing. Talk to the girl and tell her you have no intentions of competing with her, you just want some quality time with your son and her too, if she will accept you. If that doesnt work, then best thing to do is to let him come to his senses on his own.

It's just normal for you to be overprotective because my mom is very much like you too. Honestly, I like overprotective parents because they know what's best for me. As long as you will explain the main reason why you need to act that way, I believe that there is no reason for your son to feel that you're trying to mess with his relationship. Go for it! You're on the right track!
