Chongqing is definitely not the world's largest city. The Municipality of Chongqing has a larger population than any city in the world, but the Municipality and the City are two different things.
The two largest cities in the world are Mexico City and Sao Paolo. Some disagree and say Tokyo. Shanghai is the largest city in China.

OMG, when i was looking up info on China, I ran into this city called "Chongqing" and the more I looked into it I learning it was the largest city in the world and it's also the fastest growing city in the world! WHAT? i never new that and I know lots about China. How come they always say that Shanghai is the largest city in China or that Tokyo is the largest city in the world? Am I missing something? But Chongqing is one city I'll be visiting when i studying abroad next summer 2008!

Ch'ung-ch'ing) is the largest and most populous of the People's Republic of China's four provincial-level municipalities, and the only one in the less densely populated western half of China. Formerly (until 14 March 1997) a provincial city within Sichuan Province, the municipality of Chongqing has a registered population of 31,442,300 (2005). The boundaries of Chongqing municipality reach much further into the city's hinterland than the boundaries of the other three provincial level municipalities (Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin), and much of the municipality, which is roughly the size of Austria, is rural. The population of the urban area of Chongqing proper was 4.1 million in 2005.

In terms of land area, it is not the largest. The largest is the Municipality of James Bay, in Quebec with 350,000 square kilometres (135,136 square miles), making it by far the largest municipality in the world..but with a population under 50,000 people scattered all over the place...There are more caribou than humans there...
Population-wise...Wikipedia -if you trust that source- says that Mumbai is the largest...
