About a month ago I was checking prices on flat screens in my local Sears and I asked a simple question about the monthly payments on a Sears card. The guy signed me up for a Sears card when I clearly told him I didn't want one. Anyways, I received the card in the mail about a week ago and I still have not activated it. I read that it is hard to get a Sears card...why is that? I have a $3,000 limit and I would like to cancel it without even activating it. Do I just call Customer Service? Will they charge me for cancelling it without activating it? Or does that even matter? Thanks in advance!

Will it lower my credit score if I just leave it alone and cut up the card or write them and cancel it?

If you don't want the card, then go ahead and cancel it. However, having the card will only help your credit and closing it could bring your score down a few points. Having it and not using it does not harm you at all.

The article below is about cleaning up your credit score, but it gives several very good descriptions of how credit works.

Hope this helps.

Call and cancel it, and make it clear that you didn't apply for it and didn't want it. Ask for confirmation in writing. They probably had some promotion where store employees would get credit for opening accounts. Next time, don't give you Social Security Number to anyone. It won't hurt your credit if you cancel it immediately. They won't charge you.

Actually, I thought Sears cards were pretty easy to get. At least they use to be.

Don't call to cancel. Do it in writing and request written confirmation that the account is closed. There shouldn't be any charge, especially if you indicate you only inquired about the card and did not apply for it.

it is hard to get one...i have no idea why...we tried years ago...he had two addresses the one we lived at then and his dads..said his address history wasnt long enough..one was for 21 years he was and still is in the military...so i have no clue what the deal was..we went to penneys...now we have no store credit cards...you tend to get ripped on the interest...just never activate it ..they wont charge you for not doing so...

your credit scores depends on who you ask...some say open accounts are good...shows you have a history you have the card and dont use it..others say bad..personally we have a goodys account have no idea what we did with the card..i think we cut it up ...we havent had it in five or six years...it stays open..it always shows current on the credit report of nothing being paid nothing late...we have one credit card from years ago im talking 1998 ish...was late we closed it..thats what that account shows..late...even though there is nothing on it hasnt been anything on it in years it shows late...so it would have been better to keep it open to get a good report of nothing on it nothing late...i would personally keep it and not activate it
