I am currently thinking about buying a low end tablet for school but I was wondering if I bought my textbooks and scanned them onto my tablet so I wouldn’t need to be carrying around 10 hard cover books would I be breaking the law?

Well, you aren't technically making or distributing copies. I'd think that would be fine (as long as you actually purchase the textbooks.

it is a wonderfull idea to scan ur text on the tablet pc...but if ur considering the legal aspect then the text content are not supposed to be transmitted in any electronic or other transmission media ...but dont you worry until u are not using it for public distribution of the text content ur safe from law...so go out have ur way

I'd definitely do that if I were you. I dunno if it does break the law in your state/country, but I guess it's still fair use because after all, you bought the paper versions anyway, and you merely want a more convenient way of accessing/reading them.

The paper versions don't allow you to go to a certain page as quickly as using an e-book reader's word SEARCH engine.

Its called Fair-Use.

Come on, who cares. Its not like you're going to get arrested for it. Just think logically, does this hurt the company? If they provide scanned in copies of their books then you might not want to do this but if not its not like they are losing out.

No, they have something for this at Best Buy. You can actally buy books that already come in a format for this as well. All of my books are online so I carry nothing around, it's great!

Well, please look at your hard copy text book. It's been stated very clearly what you can and can't do about them. However, you are free to write to the publisher about your thoughts and get a written permission for you to do so.

Yes and no. It's illegal to reproduce copyrighted material, however, as long as you don't try to sell it and make a profit off it, you'll be fine. Just stay off the radar.
