how does the pay scale work. i know you start out at E-1 and go up. but i was wondering how rate affects it and how often do you go up in rate and stuff like that. to tell the truth i have no idea on what any of it means really so go easy on me.

hey man,
you start out as an e-1 which is a recruit then at graduation you will go to an e-2 seamen apprentice or a e-3 seamen depending on what you work out with your recruiter. this time is being a non-rate you don't have a designated job basically. then once you go to a school you will become a petty officer an e-4. then six months after that and after you do everything you need to you can become an e-5. to keep advancing you need to have a certain time in, and you need to learn certain things about the next rank then you will take an easy test about it, things that also help making rank is sea service and certain medals and ribbons you earn give you points to help put you above other people trying to advance. your pay all depends on your rank and sea service. you could be an e-5 with a lot of sea service and be making more than an e-6 with no sea service it all depends on your rank and sea service so the more time you have on a ship helps and the higher you go up in rank helps. rate has nothing to do with your pay unless you were comparing an e-3 to an e-4. but a damage control man wont make more than a boatswain mate. thats how it works in the coast guard anyways.

The pay scale goes from E-1 to O-10. E being for Enlisted personnel, next up the chain are the Warrant Officers (W-1 to W-5)(except for the Air Force, we have no more Warrant Officers), then come the Commissioned Officers.
How you make "grade" or rank is dependent on the branch of service you are in. Each branch makes their own rules and qualifiers to determine who gets promoted over who. In the Air Force it is mostly based off of who is the smartest in the bunch where I have seen first hand in the Army at least in my unit, it came down to who ran the fastest. Go figure.
If you join the military to get rich you are wrong. You join to serve as the diplomatic hammer when the olive branch breaks.

Below is a link to the army pay charts for 2007. You start out as an E1 and after a certain period of time as an E1 you will cap out on pay, as with every rank after a certain period of time you will cap out. Every year or every couple years you will receive a pay rate increase due to time in grade. For example if you look at an E3 you cap out at 3 years and after that 3 years you will get the same pay even if your say in for 5 years you would still be getting the same pay.
For example if you were an E4 (Specialist) at 3 years you would make according to the chart $1883.10 per month, at 6 years you would cap out at $2062.80 per month.
There are other factors that contribute to how much you make per month such as where you live, if you have children, if you are married, if your going to school etc. Each of these factors will increase your monthly pay. I'm not saying to go out and have a bunch of kids or get married but it does make a difference.

look depends on your branch of service and if you dont get into trouble but it goes in increments of 1 year till you hit 4 then it goes up every 2 years for pay but each rank has a cap for a certain amount of years search online for military pay tables and it will show you
as long as you dont pick an overstrengthed job and you do it well you will be promoted but if your in it for the money you need to find another job

All pay and allowances listed on the websites are per month before deductions. Deductions include the Federal & State Income Tax, Social Security, Medicare. Then there is also SGLI ($27 per month for AD member's life insurance), FSGLI (up to $10 per month for spouse's life insurance), AFRH ($.50 per month for everyone). United Concordia is Dental and for a family it is $23 per month or $13 for a single. This is an allotment you must start up first.

well in the united states army after 6 mos in the army you get automticly promtoed to e-2 then another 6 mos E-3, and then after 18mos E-4, and then for E-5 (sergeant) you need 24 mos and you have to be recommended for a board and pass and meet the point system requiremtns, then E-6 is like 48 mos and the same drill.
