I have seen in my own community a person who was innocent of a crime, yet took a polygraph and failed it. He was later released as his alibi was rock solid. Yet - had he not had an alibi - then what....the police would automatically consider him a strong suspect based on those results. Otherwise, why would they ask. Isn't this an injustice to assume just because a person refuses to take a polygraph, that he be considered a suspect based on that refusal. Couldn't it be the person is smart enough to know you don't gamble with your life based on unreliability ?

For the same reason who you should never voluntarily give up your civil rights to the police. You don't see the police giving up their rights under the Peace Officer Bill of Rights (which precludes them from having to take a polygraph for official investigations).

The basic reason why I would never take one is because the police would release the results even if they knew they were false. What happens if they say I failed the polygraph? You are never better off taking one to start with.

In theory, you can clear your name if you pass one and the police will move on to someone else. The problem is, most people don't pass even when they're telling the truth.

It's NEVER a good idea to take a polygraph without consulting an attorney first. Among other problems with taking it without a lawyer present is that the police can, and will, lie to you and say that you failed and then they will question you about why you think you failed.

THE POLYGRAPH ONLY SETS UP A PRESUMPTION OF DOUBT OR NO DOUBT?

THE POLYGRAPH IS ONLY AS GOOD AS THE OPERATOR WHO ASKS THE QUESTIONS AND OBTAINS THE READINGS.

THE PROCESS IS VERY ELABORATE AND CAN BE BEATEN THIS IS WHY THERE IS NO FOUND EVIDENCE ABOUT A POLYGRAPH ONLY WHAT DIRECTION TO LOOK TO IN THE INVESTIGATION. PRESS ON OR DISMISS.
OH AS A POLICE OFFICER AND A CORRECTIONAL OFFICER, WE HAVE TO TAKE A POLYGRAPH IF ASKED TO. BUT I ALWAYS SAID IF I DID I WOULD HAVE AN ATTORNEY IN THE ROOM WITH US.

all kinds of people think that there are crystal balls and we are building our laws around that and there is a tight group that can make a lot of money off of these test that are fighting to keep them alive and get them so that they can be allowed to be used in court as evidence, glad your friend had an air tight alibi, I do see how they could be misused

Answer might depend on your motive - if you are trying to substantiate your innocence, testing might be a good thing...likewise if applying for a job.
