There is what we call Sea/Shore rotation.
He might get lucky enough and get shore duty.
Maybe even luckier if he goes back to back shore duty. If he wishes to make 20 and retire early.. he's going to do his sea time.
I haven't heard of one person who has not done any sea time.
Even Navy Career Counselors (NC) have done some sea time since they will have to learn how things work in the fleet. I would say NC's spend the most time on shore. But there are restrictions to becoming a NC.
The shortest deployment I heard is 5 months.
I just came back from a 7.5 month deployment.
While he is on deployment...the military will also give him family separation pay (if married) which is $250/month.
Note: HM/Hospital Corpsman is one of the few rates/jobs that they need in the middle east.
As we say "Choose your rate...choose your fate"

Wow those are way too many questions to answer, but I will try to help you out. If you get married, prior to enlisting together, yes, you will be placed no farther than 30 miles from your house as far as work goes. You won't be a part of the same command, but you might work on the same base. To clarify that, there is this 2nd class in my shop who is married and just had a baby, he works at HSC-23 and his wife works at HS-10... Different command, but it's on the same base, NASNI. As far as deployment's go, if you are sea duty, then yes, most likely you will deploy. It's something that everybody will have to face, married or not. The least you can enlist is 4 years, no exceptions. If she wants to become a chef, she should probably look into becoming a CS (Culinary Specialist). Yes, they are on the boat we do have to eat! You guys won't be placed on a deployment together, i.e. on the same boat, the reason i that the navy needs you 100% focused on your rate, not on your wife. I will give you one word of advice, whether you like it or not, but don't rush into marriage, especially if you are considering joining the military. The reason I say is that it's a really hard to juggle a marriage life and a professional one such as this. If you join for a year and yu guys are still together, you will know that she's with you for the long run, instead of just for that moment. Good luck with your situation.

Most jobs in the Navy deploy including Administration, Supply, etc..If you don't want him to deploy then he shouldn't look in to joining any branch of the Military or the Coast Guard. These days especially because a lot of Navy personnel are being sent to Iraq and Afghanistan on individual orders for support to those over there. It can be anywhere from 6 to 12 months.

join the Coast Guard instead, you get deployed but for the most part they are very short in comparison to the Navy, and if he is able to go Aviation he would probably deploy 1-2 times a year for 2-3 weeks each time. I think he will find the branch much friendlier, and the career more satifying,

As stated in this thread....If he wants a job but doesn't want to deploy anywhere then he should check out the civilian work force, not the armed forces. You join MY NAVY because you are ready at a moments notice to go and do whatever is needed to complete your mission. If it requires you to go to a war zone, (like myself writing this from my tent in Iraq) then that's what you do!
I think everyone in the Navy will agree that President JFK put serving in the military into the proper phrase.......
"ASK NOT WHAT YOUR COUNTRY CAN DO FOR YOU, ASK WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR COUNTRY"

Admin, or finance- but I think they are phasing those jobs out to civilians.
If she isn't willing to deploy, she shouldn't join the military.

none whatsoever. If he is unwilling to go wherever, whenever and however long he is needed, he shouldn't bother enlisting.
even Rates with traditionally low OPTEMPOs are being called up as IAs to deploy.

Yes. It's called civilian life. No free rides in the service.
