TASER electronic stun guns are a form of torture that can kill, a UN committee has declared after several recent deaths in North America.

"The use of these weapons causes acute pain, constituting a form of torture,'' the UN's Committee against Torture said. "In certain cases, they can even cause death, as has been shown by reliable studies and recent real-life events,'' the committee of 10 experts said. Three men, all in their early 20s, were reported to have died in the United States this week, days after a Polish man died at Vancouver airport after being Tasered by Canadian police. The man, Robert Dziekanski, 40, fell to the ground and died after the police officers piled on top of him. There have been three deaths in Canada after the use of Tasers over the past five weeks. The company that makes the weapons has said that similar deaths have been shown by "medical science and forensic analysis'' to be "attributable to other factors and not the low-energy electrical discharge of the Taser".

I think that they are WAY overused. There are other ways to stop a person other than just automatically tasering them for something like asking a question. Even if they don't automatically listen or obey the command, there should be other first resorts OTHER than just shocking a person.

My big problem with it is that you don't know the health condition of that person to begin with. They may be pregnant or have a pace maker which if shocked could do serious harm to the person. Even tackling a person is more humane and safer than shocking them!

The U.N. has nothing to do with how OUR police departments operate. If they want to tell us what to do, then maybe they should grow some spines and start helping out in the world besides always come crying to us for help when the sky is falling. If the people were under control and obeying commands, they wouldn't need to be tasered. The U.N. can take that report and put it where the sun don't shine.

The UN is a joke and needs to be abolished. At the very least we need to withdraw and remove them from our soil. Without US funding it would either collapse or be rendered ineffective.

It is not a form of torture by any means. I would rather taz a person than shoot them as an officer.

The UN can take their report and a large tube of vaseline, and you figure out the rest.

Yes, when used repeatedly and/or unecessarily.
