for christmas we both made lists. i wanted a LV bag( aprox $700) and he asked for a laptop( $700). i just found out he bought me a $260 change purse instead and a video game. i feel slighted. he says i'm being materialistic but how is that fair?

if you agreed on a set prince- then no, it's not fair
it doesn't mean he had to get you exactly what you asked for- but it would have been nice since you both made lists and you went out of your way to get him what he wanted

i would make it a point to tell him you thought you two were spending the same amount on each other

If he's iritated at you, but still wants you to get him a LAPTOP, he's the materialistic one. Mind you, in my family, we don't tend to spend more than fity dollars on gifts, tops - and I'm making all of mine at home this year. Return the wallet, feed a third world country, and bake the boy some cookies. Love is more important than money.

Actually not many purses cost that much. Hell, he might've even picked the most expensive one in the store. As for you, if you really think it's not fair you should get him a laptop that costs less than $700, like a used Windows XP or something, they're still good, you know.

I've always thought of it as the boyfriend spending more money on the girlfriend.. But remember: Money doesn't buy love. I think you should talk it out. Maybe do something special for Christmas instead of spending $700 each.

Just donate the $700 to a charity and tell him you did that for him.
It'll make you both feel good :)

Edit: Why didn't you two just write each other checks out for the sum and then should have done whatever. SAVE THE DRAMA FOR LATER!

Wow... That is a huge amount of money to spend on Christmas presents. My advice: donate all $1400 to a charity and just do something fun together for Christmas!

If money and material objects are important to you, then that's not a fair exchange.

If appreciating your boyfriend's gift and the thought he put into getting it for you, and seeing his face light up when your gift delights him is, then it sounds fine to me.

It all depends on what the holidays mean to you, and what your reasons for being with this man are.

I don't think gifts exchanged have to be equal in price, but I would never buy my bf a $700 gift. Save that for when (and if)he's your husband.

buy him a used laptop for the same price .he didn't get exactly what you wanted so why should you get his.that's like asking for a car and getting a bicycle.he knew he was just being cheap.probably saving some money back for another girl.
