The whole argument is silly.

Because Bill Oh Really and Charles Gibson have convinced a whole bunch of people that the phrase "Happy Holidays" was created as part of a grand plan to ban the phrase "Merry Christmas", which in turn is part of an overall campaign to eliminate Christmas from America altogether.

I think it all depends on the context in which each statement is used.

When "Happy Holidays" is used in place of "Merry Christmas" simply out of the politically correct possibility someone might be offended, it should be TS for anyone who might be offended by Peace on Earth and Good Will towards men.

However, if one would like to give someone a season's greeting, but does not know which holiday they celebrate then "Happy Holidays" is perfectly acceptable.

I understand the complaint. I also think it's ridiculous. I'm not keeping you from celebrating your own holiday by saying "Merry Christmas". Say "happy Hanukkah" and I'll be just fine! We draw the line at the keeping a holiday from people, which is exactly what we're doing by disallowing "Merry Christmas".

I don't hear anyone fighting on the "Happy Holidays" side. Essentially everyone I know -regardless of religous affiliation or non-affiliation - is perfectly okay with "Merry Christmas", myself (atheist) included.

I think Bill O'Reily and others of his ilk wanting to stir up trouble have convinced people that there is a war on Christmas and consequently Christianity. What I see as more religions gaining acceptance in this country, they see as an attack. I think a lot of it boils down to insecurity. I think that type of person has to have his or her beliefs echoed by everyone.
