The original riddle/poem is from the 14th century. Here is the original (in modern English):

As I was going to St Ives
I met a man with seven wives.
Each wife had seven sacks,
Each sack had seven cats,
Each cat had seven kits;
Kits, cats, sacks and wives -
How many were going to St Ives?

Of course only "I," or one person was going to Sait Ives.

one man, unless you count "went down", not walking. If "went down" is not walking, then none.

Unless the man he was talking to was walking down to Saint Ives. If that is the case, there are two.

If the mans wives have come, too. Then there is eleven.

Also, you did not specify if each wife had nine children, or the man had nine children all together.

If all together there was nine children. And they all came along, there would be 21.

If each wife had nine children and all the children came too. Then there is 92.
9x9= 81 children
1 man+1 man=two men
9 wives=9 wives
81+9+2=92 people

You didn't give enough information to be exact. The man could have told the man that went down to saint ives about his wives and children. Or the second man could have not even been going to Saint Ives. A riddle is a riddle and many answers can be concluded from the information given, but I did enjoy pondering this thought. =]

There re multiple answers because nothing is stated in this riddle. Only a story with no details left to notify the answer.
