My german shepherd Lucky is by far my "lassie" Sadly she won't help other animals as much but the loyalty she gives me and my family...I almost don't believe it sometimes. When I was younger she would follow me through the creek and woods so I never felt lonely, and I never felt scared either. She may not be obedient in commands, she knows the basics and hwo to walk on the leash) And maybe she can't caryr things or anything what some would say amazing but to me she is amazing. She has saved our home from robbers or who knows what twice. Two times. And saved my brother from someone who tried to capture him when he was taking out the trash. She jumped the fence and ran at him, luckily not going far. She gave my brother time to climb the fence and get safely in our back yard and scare the guy off. The cops didn't do anything and even though my brother is paranoid when Lucky is with him he is never afraid of anything. She sleeps on my bed some nights, but mostly in the hallway where she can keep tabs on everyone. Usually around 2-3am she will walk about and nuzzle you, usualyl you don't notice she is so gentle. I guess to make sure you are ok and still there. if you leave the room she follow, and even though she isn't a lap dog she will lay at your feet any day.Whenever you leave the house to take out the trash or get the mail, etc she will wait at the door, watching through the storm door, her eyes so serious and still. With those wonderful, brave, sharp eyes you can't feel afraid. Yes she barks at the mail man, yes she barks at the bug guy but she has done so much for me, my family, my brother, I owe her a million times over. She was great with kids, but now that her hips are getting older she prefers to just walk away and leave the kids to us. But she is still friendly just not as playful, but at 9 years old I think we cna give her a break. She spent many years going camping with us, hiking sometimes as well. (We used to go every year but not anymore) Lucky is my life's joy and helps me feel safe at night when the wind blows and lightening crashes....even as a teenager it cna be creepy. But with my brave shepherd by my side I never fear anything. Together we go against anything. Even with grey now on her muzzle she still looks as elegant and as strong as she was when she was 2 years old. Lucky is definately my Lassie.

My current 'Lassie' is an 80lb German Shepherd lady called Willow!
We 'rescued' her in May this year and although she had very little human contact in her first 3 years she has adapted well to living in a house and is so intelligent that training her to obey human commands has been very easy. All she wants to do is be near me and is curled up by my side as I type this! If my hubby or son give her a command when I'm there she looks at me as if to ask if she has to obey, yet obeys instantly when I'm not there! It's really funny as usually my hubby can control any dog and has always been seen as the Alpha! I live in quite a rough neighbourhood but with her by my side I can walk safely at any time day or night and although she never shows any aggression her alertness is unmistakeable! She's not a friends with everyone type of dog but will stand or sit calmly and let anyone pet her. She'll accept anyone who comes in to the house and always seems to know which people like dogs.
I have 'unstable angina' and can have an attack at anytime and she knows before I do that one is going to happen! She has even woken me up one night just before the pain started! She's an incredible, beautiful and very special dog and the bond we have is unlike any I've shared with the many other dogs we've owned!
I feel as though I've had her a lot longer, love her deeply and can't imagine life without her now!

My "Lassie", or let's call her my soulmate, is Sophie, my Aussie/Husky mix. She is ten now, and has been the smartest and most maternal dog I have ever known since she was a puppy. She tells us when one of the pins pushes the screen door open and gets out, she tells us when one of the dogs is sick, she lets us know when there are wild animals in the yard, and when I am sick she is my "Doctor Dog". She doesn't leave my side and doesn't bother me. She has potty trained and helped leash train every other dog in my house, and that is alot as I foster. She breaks up disagreements between dogs in a non-violent manner and doesn't allow food aggression from the other dogs. She grooms everyone's ears and whatever else they need done.
She is calm, obedient and very well behaved. My vet loves her and all my friends want her (over my dead body). She can do lots of tricks, and will heel without a leash. She is also the only dog I have ever had who actually caught the squirrel!
I don't know what I will do without her-there will never be another Sophie.

My 'lassie' is my 2 year old American Pit Bull Terrier that I adopted from my local animal shelter. I honestly could not ask for a better dog. She is the perfect dog for me. She is extremely friendly with everyone and everything. She loves my family, strangers, other dogs, and she even loves our cats. She is very smart. She knows many tricks, and she will do anything I ask of her. Even if the door is wide open, if I say "wait" she will sit and stay there until I say okay. She is my constant companion. And she has been spreading the positive word about Pit Bulls to everyone in our area. She has changed many people's minds about the breed. I am so proud of her.

Wow, what a great question ! You get a star for this one because I have affectionaltely refferred to my current dog as Lassie, (even though he is a male as some of the Lassies were,) just because he is smart and protective. I thought I was the only one to do so, so it's great to read of another big Lassie fan! I was a fan of the series and have been fortunate to have had two of my own Lassies in my lifetime.
My first dog, Jenny, was so smart I ran out of things to teach her. I used to tell friends she is almost as smart as Lassie ! The most fun trick of hers to show off was her "bark loud" with a big WOOF, then a "bark shhhh" with a whisper of a woof. Funny. She was a black lab, great with the kids, tolerated them well, even when my oldest played dentist with her ! She protected us proudly for 14 years.
Allow me to now brag a bit about my current "Lassie" who is a 30 pound terrier mix named Oreo, and looks exactly like a smaller replica of my first dog mentioned here. He does several tricks as well, but his biggest talent is that he can take commands in English and Spanish! He was about six mos. old when I found him on the streets of Orlando. He didn't respong to common commands so I started thinking he was deaf. That is until I realized there is a huge hispanic population there, so I started talking to him in Spanish and he proceeded to sit, come, even "give me a kiss" without hesitation ! Pretty cool and people always love it to this day. He is so smart ! I have often said to him when he comes up to me, like he is trying to tell me something, "What is it Lassie, did Timmy fall in the well? !!!" LOL On a more serious note, he has protected me once when a strange guy approached me strangely, and then several times on walks, he on a leash of course, other dogs have jumped fences or broke leashes to charge or attack us, and he always got between me and the other dogs to protect me. I used to pull him to stop but then I read somewhere to let him have the leash, never stop him from protecting you, that is his job. So he is extremely brave and I will miss him tremendously when his time comes. For now he is a healthy 13 year old, and treated like the movie star he is in my mind ! Thanks for the great question !

My dog Hector is my 'Lassie.' He's a Bracco Italiano and weighs 70lbs. We got him as a puppy and we've both grown up together. Now he's a little over 2 years old. He's my show dog -- something new for both of us, but we've both gotten relatively good at it. He likes to sit on a chair next to me and look me in the eyes and make little "woo woo" sounds. It's hilarious and pathetic at the same time. He has the funniest expressions on his wrinkly face -- although most of the time it makes him look stupid.

My "Lassie" is a 90lb black lab named Lily. She's a mess, but a good girl. She is always trying to protect me from all the noises she hears outside and even the garbage man. She also stands in front of me and protects me from that scary dancing reindeer her mom brought home from the Christmas party! = )
