I just found out I have an interview on Friday, and it's a step up from my current job. But of course, I could possibly not get the job. If I call in sick, they will want me to work from home, but I will be unable to because I will be at the interview all day. (3 hour drive). If I tell him that I have an interview and I am going to it no matter what, can they fire me? They cannot fire someone from going to an interview for a different job can they? I have been there 10 years, so I don't think they would fire me, but they make start looking to replace me.

Tell him you have personal business. Then, ask your interviewer to be discreet if he has to call your company.

do not tell the boss, under any circumstances. All you will accomplish by that is opening the door to your dismissal at some unforseen (and untimely) time.

Do some basic career guidance research online. I doubt many will suggest to let your boss know about an interview.

Use a family emergency- brother can't take your dad, so you have to do it on short notice... etc. Or wife, to the hospital, someone related.

Don't tell your boss you have an interview. Only mention anything about another job if you have an offer and you are resigning. You need to look out for yourself. Your boss needs to lookout for himself. You can always be a nice guy and give additional notice more than 2 weeks after you have the new job sealed.

Call in sick, then make sure your internet connection is down, or your computer breaks, or ask for a day off, if that's possible.

Don't tell them you are interviewing. You may not get the job and you have then notified your employer that you are no longer interested in working for them.

Yes, they could fire you. Many states are employment at will. They don't really need a reason.

Let your boss know that you are going to a job interview. You are not actively seeking other employment but that the potential job would be a career advancement for you.You have been there 10 years. Maybe he might offer you a raise to stay where you are.

Ask him if you could use him as a reference. It would make you look pretty bad if the interviewer phoned your boss about you and you had told him some other story, like visiting a csick relative out of town.

Take a vacation day or a personal day. Don't tell your boss you are interviewing for another job unless he is mentoring you and encouraging you to move up the employment ladder. Yes, he can fire you for interviewing for another job.

If you get an offer that you want to accept, tell the boss and see if he offers you a raise, new responsibilities, or new title to keep you around. If not, you have another job!

Talk to your boss. Let him/her know you are not unhappy in your present position; but, you have an opportunity for a job with more responsibility and more pay. Offer to relinquish a day of your vacation pay to make this interview.

Who knows? Your boss may value you so much as an employee, he will offer your more responsibility and pay at your present job.

Take care of U. you can not help others if you can not help yourself first. No one looks out for you , except you. The risk of exposing others to illness, especially at a restaurant is very high indeed. This is a matter of public safety. She can get into trouble for exposing patrons to illness and should be reported to the Better Business Bureau (BBB), The department of Consumer affairs, The Public Health Department, and The Employee Development Department( for unfair employment practices)She will be investigated Find another job. If your boss is that inconsiderate of others and is demanding that you come in and expose others to sickness. The department of public health should be aware. If she is sick, she is likely exposing everyone else too. As an employer, there are issues that must be addressed, what if you came down with Hepatitis A, it is quickly passed along through food handling, and she is here threatening you. This sounds like it should be reported to the public health department. They will come down on her restaurant and investigate the matter, this is a matter of public safety. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><... U could call her and tell her that you are going to your doctor, he will direct your health care needs and you do not wish to expose the public to an illness that can be easily spread to patrons. It is a public safety issue as well. She can not fire you over this, and if she does it will be unlawful termination. You are ill.

Let me ask you this, if you were a supervisor what would you tell your employee if they told you that they couldn't come into work because of a job interview.

I would call in sick - for a family member. And indicate that you will need to drive them to the dr. A parent is great if you have one that would be believable. Say your parent needs to have a biopsy. That is something that would take a bit, require family strength, show up now and again (so if you have to use it for real in the future) and be able to "go away" if you get the job - phew it was benign.
