I was wondering if they will make good coon hunting dogs or if trying to train them is a waste of time? Thanks for any comments. They look just like a black and tan with no treeing walker characteristics visible.

I know several guides and outfitters who use mix breed hounds for hunting. Just because yours are mixed doesn't mean much from a working dog point of view. If one or both of the parents was a hunting dog yours should do well.

Why do you think they wouldn't make good coon hunting dogs? Just because they're mixed? Or because they're older? Both black and tans and treeing walkers are coon hounds...just two different breeds. Kind of like golden retrievers and labrador retrievers are both retrievers...just two different breeds. Both breeds should have the same basic instincts since they were both bred to do the same job. Just because your dogs are mixed doesn't mean they won't have coon hound instincts. And if they have the instincts and natural skill to be good hunters the fact that they are 5 months old shouldn't be a hinderance to their training. Dogs are capable of learning new skills and behaviors throughout their entire lives, not just as young puppies.

It depends if you bought them for pets or as hunting dogs. If you wanted them as companions, I'd say no. For hunting only, then any kind of coon dog has instincts in them, but from what an old friend of mine had told me a long time ago, who trains dogs for other people before they adopt them, is that you can't keep them as companions. They can't be brought in the house and treated like other housepets. I don't exactly know if this is only during training or for the pets life.

you may have some real winners there...a black and tan stray momma whelped on my back porch many years ago. i had no problem finding homes for the pups, never found the owner (looked placed adds the whole works), and she was a marvelous hunter...treed coon, pointed and flushed quail, hunted and treed squirrel....she loved to hunt and was good at it...she was hard headed though....they are a hard headed dog...a great dog wonderful pet and hunting companion, but hard headed...

If that is what their breed instincts are then find a mentor.
Waste of time..............? Only a qualified person can tell you that.
You will only be wasting your time if you don't find a constructive way to find the way each pet individually needs to pursue it's energy. Pets don't have a choice in their owners...it's the owners responsiblity to do so.

I'm sure they'll have some natural ability, and if you train them they'll be any better. It's their instinct to hunt, training will never be a waste of time.

They'd probably have the instinct for it - it's worth a shot.
