We got a thousand points of light
For the homeless man
We got a kinder, gentler,
Machine gun hand
We got department stores and toilet paper
Got styrofoam boxes for the ozone layer
Got a man of the people, says keep hope alive
Got fuel to burn, got roads to drive.

Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world
Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world.

Perhaps he was trying to point out our faux compassion. We (I use this term loosely, of course) pretend to care, but only because it's fashionable. When it comes down to it, that is not where our priorities lie. :)

I see a woman in the night
With a baby in her hand
Under an old street light
Near a garbage can
Now she puts the kid away,
and she's gone to get a hit
She hates her life,
and what she's done to it
There's one more kid
that will never go to school
Never get to fall in love,
never get to be cool.

I don't see any hope in this song. I always think of the baby in the trash can, "Never get to fall in love".

We live in a free country with all the comforts of life, while we have a war raging, homlessness in the streets, and mothers who are strung out on crack.

This song has made me cry more than once.

Well...many rock musicians are modern day prophets. Rock music tends to be aggressive, outspoken, and creative, plus it tends to challenge the establishment. All the makings of a true spiritual warrior. The song is a peaceful call to arms.
Keep on rocking VC!

-----the song is designed in a way that gets you just angry enough to take action. *wink*

What I take from it is that we have one society - the human one regardless of race and one earth and if we destroy either it's game over. You can still have a free world, be a unique individual within it and help your fellow human being and try to take care of the social and environmental ills around you.

I'm pretty sure the "spiritual message" was: the last thing we need is another Bush in the whitehouse. Too bad we didn't listen.

It wasn't spiritual, it was angrily political yet so many missed the point. "Party on, dude" while the world was in flames. He foresaw the evils of the Bush family.

I'd have to agree with Orpheus. Also, I think it's a comment on how shallow and superficial political rhetoric is. (((VC)))
