Few states in the US require you to register that you own a weapon. Illinois in one state and some cities require registration but not all.

If no permit is required, you can purchase the gun after completeing the required paperwork for the three-day waiting period/background check. If you transport it, put it in the car unloaded, in a case and in an unaccessable place like the trunk.

If you have never had any experience with firearms, definitely sign up for training or lessons.

It depends on the law in each state...most states require a permit to purchase a handgun, but not a long gun such as a shotgun or rifle...I think the best weapon for home defense is a 12 guage shotgun..but think carefully if you have children in the house...even occasionally. I keep mine well hidden out of reach of children...and NOT loaded!

Under the US Constitution, you should not have to.

But if you live in a restrictive state such as Illinois, then you need a FOID card. If you live in Alaska, you can walk right in and out showing nothing but cash!

If you don't live in the United States, better look into it elsewhere. We are among the free-est people in the world on the topic of Firearm ownership.

DEPENDS what country you live in.. This site is a world wide website.

In my country (New Zealand) you need a licence and to sit a test before you can have any type of firearm except for air guns.

State laws vary...
most states will have a waiting period - the time between purchase and delivery of the handgun, as compared to buying a shotgun which is usually 'cash and carry.'

Remember Mr. Brady who shoot President Regan. After that incident a law went into effect that you must apply for a permit to purchase a hand gun. It takes five days after applying so a background check can be conducted.

If I lived in a place where that was necessary, I would strongly consider moving.

What kind of gun and where are you?
